Defective ProPointer probe

New member
I really wanted to give that piece of equipment a good review. I was thrilled when I got it since it seemed very well built and ergonomic. It also performed very well in the field.

Then one day, after just two weeks of use, without any reason it just stopped working. It started behaving completely erratically, beeping when you touch it, when you don't touch it, when you put it down, when you pick it up, and sometimes just when you look at it. It has not been abused in any way. It has not been dropped, not been submerged, not been exposed to vibrations etc.

I live in the EU and couldn't phone Garrett, so I wrote two e-mails to sales@garrett.com. No answer in 5 days. Then I managed to find the e-mail of one of their managers and sent an inquiry to it also. No answer. So I think it is only fair to post this and to warn other potential buyers that although this thing seems very nice, it may betray them.

Here is the video (btw. the duct tape is there only to mute the speaker):

Duct tape has a metallic component to it. Remove it then try it
Duct tape will also conduct electricity so don't cap wires with it
Good Luck Mike

Sorry to hear you got a bad one, but out of the THOUSANDS, maybe millions they have sold, there's bound to be a bad one sometimes, looks like you got it, But if you happen to get hold of the right person or department, they will make it right, they are a great company and really take care of their customers, I wish i could help you, but I'm just a person like yourself, and hate to see anyone get a lemon, but due to where you live I don't have any clues or ideas on who to tell you to get in touch with, Maybe one of the other folk will jump in here, best wishes and HH.

Why would living in the EU preclude you from calling Garrett?

I realize you might pay per minute for the call. But from most countries in Europe it's pretty cheap to call the US with some of the no contract plans from various companies.

Invest what will probably be a Euro or less and call them. Ask for Sue or Melinda in customer service. I'm sure they'll take care of you.

Since you bought it from another country other than your own then you already knew about the cost of warranty issues. It's not Garrett's fault that shipping will be costly to you. You will have to ship it to the factory and I'm sure they will send you another one. Just as I would if I purchased from your country. Maybe a kind letter to Garrett about your product could net you some free goodies. But posting a warning will get you nothing. You don't know if your emails are blocked? Why can't you call Garrett? Yes, it will cost you some money to call but why don't you try? They might just simply send you another pinpointer? If after you make a confirmed contact to Garrett with no success on your problem than that's when you can gripe about your issue. I would even call Garrett myself and tell them to call you if that will help? Just PM me your phone number and I'll do it. I don't know how many Propointers have been sold to date. I'm sure it's a lot. There have been very few problems with them. Even a $100,000 Mercedes will have warranty issues.

Your problem has a simple solution. Call Garrett or email Melinda at Melinda.Harper@garrett.com and they will gladly send you a new unit. They have sold thousands of these units and there is bound to be a lemon here and there. Your problem is certainly not an indication the the entire product line sucks. I field tested the unit and have one of the first ones made and haven't had a lick of trouble with it. just contact Melinda and your problem will be solved.

OK guys. First - the duct tape has been there from the beguiling, when the probe worked fine. It is not the cause of this problem. Without it the probe behaves the same.

Second, I finally managed to get in contact with Garrett. I don't know if this is a result of the YouTube video or not. I am not impressed at how they are handling this issue at all. They did offer to send a new unit free of charge, which was a nice surprise, but then they got into negotiation with the dealer I bought mine from in order for him to cover the shipping, which was a very stupid thing. All in all I am pretty disillusioned by this company and if nothing exceptional happens today I will just buy a different probe from somewhere and forget about them. I will give them a few more hours. Too bad, as I was a real fan - the GTI2500 is my main detector.

They are replacing your unit free of charge, but you are not impressed because they are not footing the bill for shipping?

There is no company whose warranty includes paying your shipping.

In all the time I've followed this forum, yours is the first time I remember seeing a complaint about Garrett's customer service.

I removed the video for now since Garrett did offer a free replacement unit. In the same time I noticed a comment on YouTube saying that another user has similar problems with his unit, and a third person on another forum complained of the same issue. I really hope these are isolated cases though and if the new unit they send me proves to be working well, I would gladly write a favorable review. In the meantime, I can only testify as to what I've experienced.

I had a problem with mine, I bought it from Kellyco, they sent it to my broker, got imported and then shipped to me down in mexico. The problem with mine was that it did not work at all, only the light worked. nothing else. So I contacted Garrett and I was treated very well, they told me to ship it back to them and they will replace it and ship it back directly to me. So I guess some times is just bad luck and might get a defective one, but Customer service at least for me it was great, I love my new Propointer and it works fine!

Was this a joke? You got in contact with them because of your video? Your video is not the reason for anything. The reason they got in contact with you was to make a customer happy by offering a free replacement unit and getting in contact with the seller to foot the bill but they obviously refused. If this is bad service I wish all would go this far.

Maybe you could get Obama to bail u out. lol

just kidding-------- My Pro-P works great cut search time down significantly.:detecting:

Its unfortunate but there will always be on or two out of the many that may have a problem.
Sometime quality control people miss them. I've had no trouble with my Propointer. If I do
I know it will be replaced free of charge. I know your along way off from the USA but its a good pointer and
worth your getting another one.

I agree with this guy...if something costing $127 like these dinky hand held PPs are DOA or breaks under say 30 days, there should be a total replacement, shipping including. I don't blame the guy for swearing off Garrets stuff after this. Oddly I have one of these in the mail right now after having two other PPS delivered which were defective out of the box, and I won't buy from them, nor did I want a replacement. It doesn't help us unfortunate people who happen to get the lemons, for sellers and other users to criticize us for losing our cool when "the world" stands up on a soapbox and says these are perfect and nobody has problems. I am on two strikes on PP within 2 weeks, a Sun Ray XL-1 and the Pistol Probe. Between the two returns, I am out a total of about $15 in shipping. The XL-1 and Pistol Probe people also had the same thing to say, almost sarcastically, like I was at fault.

No, in his case all costs should be paid for, including all postage. A good company would do that with a DOA unit. I said a good company. My Pro Pointer will be here by Thursday, and surely to God!, my luck will be better with the Garrett. I am a bit worried now though.

You didn't mention if you tried a new battery.
Although it sounds simple it should be the first thing regardless of the problem.
So in case you didn't yet, pop in a new one
I'm a retired electronics tech, was about to send my pointer back but tried a second "new" battery and saved myself the trouble
Good Luck

PS I had already called Garrett, had no problem. They said to send it back with a note and they would take care of it.

If you bought your propointer direct from Garrett and it's defective within 30 days, I could understand your wanting them to pay the shipping costs. However, if you bought it from a broker in your country, I see no reason why the broker should not absorb the shipping costs. I know how frustrating it can be when dealing with some companies, but Garrett has given me great customer service and continue to exceed my expectations. I hope they can get you squared away. Good luck to you. HH
