deep targets

i have a soveriegn gt that i have had a couple of months,i am getting used to it but not quite sure how to recognise deep targets.any tips ?.

You will get a faint signal that repeats in all directions. Also note that some small targets will give you a weak signal. With a little practice you won't have any problems determining these types of signals. If in doubt DIG.

First thing is the deep one will be a smaller target and weaker signal so you have to be going slow for the GT to see them. Normally you have notice by now you have to go slow to to see most targets, but the deeper ones you have to go even slower, so I go slow and if I feel there is some real deep coins in this area I will even go slower and listen close. With experience you will learn to be able to tell those tones without looking at the meter as to which ones are good and which ones are not. Swing along with the coil you will hear the nulls and tones of the trash items and all of a sudden there will be that tone that will stop you and you will want to check out further. Those change in the threshold that go high tone are also the one you want to check out doing the Sovereign wiggle trying to get the tones and the meter reading to climb, but just can make it to the correct numbers or tones but sure is trying to have been some very deep coins for me. Most of this comes with experience with the GT as you will or should learn something every time out with it. If you have the patience and get to know the GT I am sure you will see why those that do may try other detectors, but always will have a Sovereign or go back to one.

Here is a little article I saved on my computer of what i learned about a Sovereign and will post once in a while to help some out getting to know your Sovereign.

What I have learned with the Sovereign series of Minelab detectors

The Sovereigns are a different type of detectors and not like anything most have ever used. These do take some time to get used to and the biggest tip I can give it DON

The really deep targets will often give a null, BUT, if there is any hint of a climbing tone then I will always investigate.

As you remove sand, if there is a constant null and no sign of a climbing tone then I will usually cease digging.

As I hunt beaches, removing a few inches of sand is easy. I do this on any audio that is iffy.

Tony.

Hey Mightymorf, Rick is exactly right. I am also new with the GT but am starting to figure it out. I know what you are going through right now. here is what I have done so far hope it help's you out
1. Listen to the folk's on the forum, they have ton's of experince and know what works.

2.When you here someone say the signal was loud and clear. It probably was but was also more than likely a smaller, signal but fairly clear. So,those loud obnoxius sounds are surface trash and surface clad, thing's I have begun ignoring and focusing on the smaller more faint sounds.
3. When you get one of these signal's it may not be what you were expecting,But you will know because it got your attention and it sounded different from all the loud annoying signals you have been hearing and maybe digging.
4. That signal also may not sound like it's worth investigating further just because that isn't what you were expecting. If it get's your attention go back and sweep in different direction's using the wiggle. You will hear the tone trying to climb and the numbers will try to climb on the meter. Trust me as a new guy with a GT, THIS WORKS!
5. I firmlly believe you need a meter to learn the Sovereign. If you have one, you will see that the machine and the meter don't lie. Trust the meter most of the time but don't live or die by it. Instead be ready to dig any high tone despite what the meter number is and trust your ear's. An example: this weekend I got an odd signal, it started out as a lower tone but was just different. I wiggled the coil over it and the tone startetd to climb as did the numbers. That was good enough for me. I dug down a little past my lesche safety guard and low and behold a ring at about 7/12 inches. It was just a junker but I now knew what Rick and other's have been talking about. A fantastic learning experience. Now I just need to put the coil over some old coin's.
6. Patience. Keep going and keep trying. One of those trips will set you on the right path. Thing's will just start to click and you will have the knowledge and confidence to know you can find old deep coin's if they are there. That's what happened to me this weekend. When I found the ring I adjusted my way of interpretting what I was hearing and went on to find a cool old token and some older wheaties along with some small buttons and of course a few thing's that fooled me. All at some respectable depths.
7. THANK'S RICKND AND CDSMITH FOR ALL THE INFO

Good luck,Gary

Great sumation Gear box...thats the best explanation Ive read yet, Ive had my Sov. GT for about a month and Ive had 4 or 5 other detctors in the past( all beep and dig) but I know this is one of the best machines out there and I just have to get in snyc with it.

hi guys i have had abit of a play around with my SOVEREIGN XS-2a Pro machine today, mainly to see were the auto depth is matched when used out of auto. i have done some air test on a small silver coin.
the machine was layed on the floor with a tape measure layed in frond of the coil. i played around with the sensitivity knob and this is what i came up with.
see pic.......
please remember the test was air tested only.

personally i will only use the auto setting if the field conditions wont allow me the use the sensitivity knob anyware out of auto. depending on the field conditions the 12 o'clock position is ok to use but quite often i have to back it of to about the 2-3 o'clock position. if you wont to find them deeper small targets you need to hunt out of auto when ever the conditions will alow it........

i recently found a hoard of 122 silver hammered coins with my SOVEREIGN XS-2a Pro and when the coins were found the the signals were a bit of a iffy one. if you look at the pictures of the coins you will notice that some of them have rust patches on them wich was a bit strange and was trying to throw the signal a bit. 80 of the coins were found in a 2-3 foot patch at different depths up to a foot, most of them were stuck together in 3,5,7 etc some were on there own.
42 of them were found up to 30 feet away from aroundabout were the main patch was found with a slowed down sweep speed but in the end of the hunt 5 of them were found only because the sweep speed went to a slow wiggle.
from what i have experienced with finding these coins dig all them bit iffy signals or you may be wondering later on what goodies you have left behined.

i have also done the same test with the 10" stock coil that came with the machine.
now all i have to do is do a field test between the two coils. i will get back with a update on this once i have done the test......

Sovereign-fan,

Which coil were you using on your XS-2A Pro as you made your finds? Have you used the BBS 1000 coil over the area as well?

Congrats on the Hoard - impressive.

Rich -

i was using the 12.5 excelerator coil when i found the hoard. i havn't used the 10" BBS 1000 coil much as i bought the 12" coil just after i bought the machine as i found the 10" coil to heavy to use for long periods of time.
the 10" stock coil must be one of the heaviest coils out there. it is 1/4" thicker the may 12" coil is.
no i havn't tryed the 10" coil on the hoard field yet.

Deep targets on the beach Hunting in Allmetal/pinpoint Using a Excalibur 800 { water proof sovereign }
I would imagine after a couple days of a good rain the sovereign gt, in the dirt, would punch very deep also
This would be a alternate way to hunt where there are fewer targets
