Deep signals kicking my butt

New member
I have had very good signals the last two times I have been out. The cursor sticks itself to the top right hand corner and I get a silver tone but faint. The depth indicator is all the way at the bottom. Before I dig I try to pinpoint, but it is very hard. I decide to go ahead an dig with the information that I have. As soon as i dig down about 4-5 inches and run the detector back over the hole, the signal in gone. What am I doing wrong? Is this a target or is the detector falsing? I find it hard to beleive that nothing is under the coil with the information the detctor is giving me. I am using an Explorer II with a SEF coil. Any help would be appriciated.

Thanks,

Roger

Hi Roger,

Try switching your machine to an open screen (no discrimination) the next time you encounter one of these types of targets. If the cursor starts bouncing to the left side of the screen ... you're probably dealing with deep iron. Also, iron signals tend to be directional so try swinging your coil over the target at different angles to see if the response nulls out or pushes to the left. You may also be running your sensitivity too high which is causing the machine to be a bit unstable. I usually set mine between 16 and 20 unless I'm hunting extremely good ground (Little trash and mineralization). If you still have a solid target after trying these things then keep digging. You may have a deep coin on the edge of the hole or a really deep big target (like a hub cap :)).

Hope this helps,
DD

Very nice answer, Dancin' Dave.

This is one of the "conundrums" I have found in my limited amount of time using, and trying to learn, my Explorer. Depth capability with this machine seems STRONGLY tied to higher sensitivity levels, and yet running higher sensitivity does seem to really increase the iffy -- possibly falsing -- type signals. The idea of checking the "bouncing" of these deep tones with the smartfind screen sounds like an excellent tool to use to try and get a hint if it may be a deep iron false, or a good target trying to reveal itself from the depths!

Thanks Dave

While I am no expert, I have experienced this often. The way I deal with it is by doing one or all of the following two things.

1) when I get one of these signals, I raise the coil just a hair or two off the ground as I sweep the coil. IF I still get the target I DIG. Something WILL be there.

2) if raising the coil loses the signal, I make sure I still get it when scrubbing the ground again. If so, I then use my digger to pierce the ground a couple times in the vicinity of the target and recheck, its usually gone then, BUT I dig a monster hole ANYWAYS always trying to be sure. When it disappears after piercing, there is nothing to be found except maybe rust stains in the sides of the hole.

I have read in some XS book that there IS always something down there, in the hole, and that if you dig long enough it will be found. So far nothing in the hole for me on those signals UNLESS I can raise the coil and still hear the target, then there has been something.

I STILL dig these deep sounding targets in hopes of finding something. Next time I will reduce the sens some and see what happens.

good luck, you are not alone.

BTW, I hunt in IM-5 to -10 and still get it.

Sounds a lot like you are in shallow soil where you are picking up weak hot rocks. This happens when your sensitivity is a little high for the amount of soil. These hot rocks will give off a high pitch.... your digital reading may be 00-31. I dont get a lot of wrap around from iron where it shows on the the right side of the screen, except maybe a bolt, but normally that shows much lower on the right side somewhere between the top and where a crown cap might hit. I really hit these hot rock in the field or some parks on hills where soil had eroded. Especially if my coil is really on the ground. Try pinpointing and raising your coil up a couple of inches.... is it still there? A lot of times they wont be. Dave has some good info as well about directional iron. My sensitivity is normally 24 manual and works well here in Ind. for me.... but when these pesty rocks are there i reduce my sensitivity..... but keep that coil on the soil for the best results.

Yup doesn't quite sound like iron to me. My experience has been iron will read even stronger once you take away some dirt not go quiet. I have had very deep coins do just what you describe. I suspect it is the halo effect that causes it to be seen by the detector before you remove dirt, and once you break the ground matrix the signal is too weak for the detector to detect. I've pulled many good coins with just such a signal.

If the cursor is way up in the upper right corner and the and depth meter is way deep usually means a hot rock. Also they tend to be a bit iffy on the location. Shallow thumbtacks can also do this.

Chris

Hum? I've never had a hot rock or thumbtack disappear. Usually, in this case, the target just moves to the dirt you have removed.

If I loose a signal, that's almost always a good sign if I am convinced there is something there....its either a nail or copper. I have had these coppers signals disappear only to reappear once the coin is out.....I agree, to drop the sens and try different directions and raise the coil a bit.

Thanks guys for the info. I appriciate it. I will try these techniques the next time I get one of these signals that KICK MY BUTT.

I have lost a few signals with the SE but installing a Sunray X-1 probe has pretty much eliminated that problem. Sometimes the target is off to the side of the hole or the target is on the side of the dirt pile. SOmetimes I run the X-1 in pinpoint.

I hope you are digging clean holes and covering them up when your done!

I have had some Deep iffy signals and after digging I find it was a small Deep object that had developed a Halo around it. After disturbing the Halo the target disappeared.

Pinpoint note the exact location of the target place a gulf tee if the target moves even an inch when you put the machine back in smart find its a nail on the side of the hole. Also compare the level of loud or faint sound between the two modes they should have some equality use a hand held pinpointer to check the side of the hole instead of digging deeper.
