Deep rusty nails(tips)

Dan-Pa.

New member
A coin will repeat from several directions and a nail usually from one way only, do remember with those real deep ones you may struggle to get it to repeat in two directions but it will. Also a slow left to right swing not a to and fro as the to and fro is not accurate with CZ's.
A nail or rusty iron usually covers more area when pinpointing while a coin cover a smaller area.
When pinpointing a nail will many times cover more area from one direction just because of its shape while a coin will be the same from different directions.
If the pinpoint seems to move while you dig for signal its rusty iron 99 percent of the time.
After a while to a trained ear the nail will just sound different but it takes time, keen hearing and good headphones.
Do remember tilted coins, ones next to trash can fool the best of us so if in doubt especially if deep do dig.
Remember these are just guides to help you and we all can get fooled but certainly will cut down on the number of those blasted rusty deep nails you dig.
Anyone have any more ideas feel free to chime in and hope this helps as years ago almost wrapped my CZ6 around a tree after I dug 8 deep rusty nails in a row until
I learned how to cut down the number dug and now dig very few after years of practice. Indeed CZ's like rusty iron but it can be defeated and hope the above tips help..

Dan, great tips. Many years of experience with CZ's and many hours in the field to base your observations. You can actually size a target by the audio. A coin will peak and drop off fast, while a rusty bolt or nail will have the peak of the audio hold slightly longer. I just sold my cz 70 and though I have had great luck with my new detector, I sort of feel like I lost my security blanket. I have had a bunch of CZ's and they were all great performers and well built. The CZ 6a I bought from you several years ago was one of the early models and it always performed like new and is still as good as any made!. R.L.

Thanks Dan. With my 6a I've always listened to the size of the pinpoint however I still dig an occasional nail. I didn't know that about the left-to-right vs. to-and-fro. Good info.

Gosh I was given that to and fro tip in the 90's from one of the best well known detectorist and to this day I find myself going to and fro with other detectors but always side to side while walking in a circle around the signal with a CZ. Sort of surprised me when I saw Nasa Tom go to and fro in one of his recent videos but he does the 45 degree circle thing also and was after a shallow target and of course I am referring to deepies 8 inches or more and always served me well so I guess its up to everyone to try it and see what they feel and what works for them as we all have our little ways of picking the goodies from the trash..

Dan or anybody that wants to jump in I just got a CZ 70 took it for a spin ground balance was wrong did not setup in auto

but it still ran smooth had a few targets pinpoint at 8inch scanning them with volume at 10 i got clean 2 way signal

drop volume to 4 got 1 way signal good 1 way bad signal dug targets thy were small iron

Did i stumble on to something Thanks Mike

PS i plan on hunting mostly for deep silver

Quote:"ground balance was wrong did not setup in auto" confuses me and needs further info.(remember proper ground balance equates to more depth and stability)
Volume under 5 gives a modulated effect (shallow loud-deep soft) and certainly worth looking into as I never heard that one on one and two way signals. Myself I always run volume at 10 to hear the extra deep silver and never run it with the modulated effect(Volume setting of four) so have no practical experience with the modulated audio of a CZ.
Perhaps someone can add some input...

The manual says when using the bobbing method for ground balancing change from ID mode to AUTO then GB then

switch back to ID mode that's the part i forgot

But i did get different response to the same target will volume change from 10 to 4

Perhaps because GB was off Thanks

Gman...I assume you were hunting in discrim mode ? If so, what at what level ? Were you on 0, 1,2 ? I find that hunting with my CZ6a in discrim mode, I almost always use level 0, so I can hear the iron sounds. The only time I hunt on level 1 is when there is way too much iron and I don't want to hear the constant low tones.

When hunting in a level above 0, sometimes the iron bleeds through and you get the high tone. Switch back to level 0, and you then may get the low/high tone back and forth...a good sign that it's iron.

Like Dan stated...you have to ground balance correctly, and always in all metal.

Dan,
Do you find deep coins that come in as repeatable in a low tone or are you talking about nails that come in high tone but only in one direction?
I have experienced bottle caps that are solid high tone until I slow the sweep way down and then are low tone and may crack high tone or switch high tone to low tone.
