deep on...

Well-known member
just for the hell of it half way through my hunt today I turned the deep "on" .. I have read that most don't notice a difference... I can honestly say that I did... I noticed it separated my targets more quickly from the iron/trash than with it off. after I switched it on I went back over an area that I had just done and found two more wheats... my swing is slow and steady, with it off I got the null then a quick tone that sounded after I was past the target... with it on, same swing it went from null to tone right away... this helped in my IDing the target as acceptable quicker. even turning 90 deg a target I would have passed on sounded off as a maybe... and that's good enough for me. just thought I would share.

I'll make the switch to deep on when I get those "thunker" sounds and sometimes it really helps. I use it when running with the NEL Hunter coil also but see little difference with the smaller/midsize coils.

I always run Deep On I was told its only purpose was to run something that helps ID at depth. I too often get that Clunking sound but I have learned to ignore it and pay attention to the Conductive reading and the sound of the good Tone, however short. This has gotten me a lot of good Coins in Iron. I think the Clunk is the transition from good target to Iron, In fact with Deep On this is a signal for me to pay more attention. Writing this I am trying to figure a way to put a Magnet on my Digger. Tired of trying to find all those small Nails and pieces of Wire in my Holes. If your Hit is in the same spot always Dig. If you are getting squeaks while pulling away from a target ignore it.

"If you are getting squeaks when pulling away from a target ignore it"....I have found the same thing,it's important to be right on top of it(as best as you can determine) to get a reading that's as accurate as possible but the sound you here as the coil is moved laterally off the target is equally important...if the target acts like its alone it should move off the target cleanly,I've found so far. There will be exceptions but that is part of how I determine to dig or not as well. A sound that's garbled and trails off is generally junk, for me,in my ground, where I hunt....YMMV.

Buy a Sunray probe and you will not have to dig the nails... It uses the detectors discrimination. You can still find them in the $225 to $300 range for the newest short version.
Thanks

I think you missed my point. I have had a couple Sunray probes but the trick with the Etrac is deciding whether or not to try to dig a target at all. A sunray will help separate a good target from nails once the hole is dug, but if you do not know there is a good target present, those iron squeaks will keep you digging all the time. Set your discrimination too high and you will not find that good coin in that bed of nails. Just takes time to learn the sounds. I really think Deep On helps find that good target by enhancing ID at depth.

How high do you set your discrimination? if you dig anything 30+ ferrous, you will did a lot of iron. Ya you may find a coin once in a while doing this but it is a choice you make. I do not dig anything with a ferrous number above 29 and it must not stay that low. The number must bounce back up and down. This is where I let the detector decide when I dig. Good luck!

On one of my Etracs I have Fe set at 27 on the other (Small Coil) I have it set at 25. I really do not look for an ID but I do listen for that Thunk which is actually a good sign. Then I listen for a tone or determine if the Squeak is occurring when I move away from the target. I think that to get a really good Thunk you mush be set for High Trash but not sure. Works for me. I just glued an Earth Magnet on my Digger Handle to clear the hole of all the nails quicker. This was never necessary with other Detectors which is most likely why I find so many targets with Nails around them and Nickles. I am really missing my Sunray I bought two for Whites Detectors but after switching to Etrac, I can not find one at a reasonable price.

I can not see why someone like Minelab does not partner with Sunray and make their Detectors standard with a Sunray. Minelab prices are already much higher. Another $150 or so would not make much of a difference in price, but to the Consumer it would make a huge difference.

I have always used Deep On..... Fast Off, it work's for me, for others?

For me, after a lot of experimenting in the areas that I hunt, I start with DEEP ON and FAST OFF. For me, I get a better audio signal with these settings.

Target probes are a MUST HAVE. As for use of the SunRay probe. They are great. Not cheap though. I had one on my Explorer XS for many years and my E-Trac for a short time. Shoulder surgery and needing to remove some swing weight forced me to go with a handheld unit. I am currently using a handheld probe that is NOT discriminating because I WANT to know if there is IRON or other discriminated items in the hole. I had NO IDEA now many nails and bits of rusted iron my Explorer and E-trac were ignoring until I started using my probe in ALL metal pinpoint mode. It is common to remove 2 or 3 or 4 rusty nails from a hole that is hiding an old coin.
