deep iron tone

comcat

New member
hiya lads,,just wanted to know if your g,t, picks up as much deep iron as mine does,,i mean around 6 inches on a 4 x 4 inch square 3/8 inch thick iron plate,,or 2 x 4 x 2 inch iron bar at similar depth,,i was ,i suppose expecting the machine to null out ,as when its out of the ground it does,,,the machine is usually set at zero on the dial ,,it also makes a long highest pitch tone for the deep iron,,i recognise this,,but it makes the same tone on a surface 50 cent english coin too,,of course if you lift the coil you know whats what,,,but would love it to just null on large iron,,but i just have to dig,,or im wondering,,what it was i just left in the ground,,,any other ways of dealing with this problem???? rgds comcat :ukflag:

Size, loudness, instability in position.......
Has it's own feel. Something usually gives it away. Once you get used to it, something in your brain will say IRON.

Try piercing the ground with your digger a few times in the vicinity of the target in question. IF the target is STILL detectable after this procedure, it is most likely not iron. If it disappears, it most likely WAS Iron trying to fool you.

I do this most often out of habit because it seems to work well for me with any detector.

Let us know if this method works for you as well.

your right mate,,,,but something else always says,,,go on check it out??? maybe i should relax a bit more,,,,ps...why does the gt ,,or i suppse the sovereign in general ,NOT give good in air readings,,,i have a chibola , which i fitted a 10 turn g,b, pot to,and its in air depth is AWESOME ,,so whAT IS BETTER ABOUT THE SOVEREIGNS AUTO GB THAN THE OTHER TOP DRAWER MACHINES,,I LOVE THE GT,,BUT I DONT REALLY KNOW WHY??? IT JUST seems right ?? IS THIS JUST BULLSHIT OR DO Y,ALL THINK THE SAME WAY OR DO YOU KNOW SOMETHING I DONT,,,RGDS COMCAT,,keep gettin into caps lock somehow,,comcat :ukflag:

Sovs do not have a ground balance in disc mode. By analyzing the ground at different frequencies, it can determine what signals are just dirt and what signals are metal. It must make a comparison between the two. In an air test, the ground component is missing and the response does not come out right at distance.

In all metal you have an auto ground balance (can be locked on the GT) that is very fast tracking. You have no way to manually force it. It runs a bit on the conservative side to keep the detector smooth and quiet. It also requires the ground component for comparison, so does not come out right with an air test.

Auto sensitivity runs on the conservative side also to keep the detector smooth.

So Sovs are designed to be easy to use and effective over changing conditions without a lot of fooling around.

Are they better than other detectors? Not always. Nobody has made a detector yet that is always better than the rest under all possible conditions.
