I wish some of you guys were in NM so i could learn some hands on from you. I read about how well others do but i keep coming up short. I have some great areas to hunt, around here ther are very few people who detect. I only know one who is serious. Hh all
From area to area the trend for treasure hunters change. Like around here there isn't a LOT of people who metal detect, although I've ran into a few in the past three or four years. BUT! in the 80's and 90's they were everywhere, spring in the city parks, court house lawns, and school yard had so many people metal detecting that at a distance it looked more like honey bees in a bloomed out clover field!
They're were detecting clubs with monthly park meetings,
They're were lots of places to locally shop for detectors, but now I don't know of any detector shops around! on a very rare occasion I'll see one or two people hunting the parks, never see anybody hunting the court house lawns, the only schools to hunt are the old closed down ones, or ones that a church has moved into.
Now I've seen a lot of post where Tabman is bringing in a fair amount of silver and pretty regularly too. I would say that he has a lot of experience going for him, but I also tend to think that he has found some really good hunting spots that may not be virgin, but on the other hand they've not been hunted to death either.
On the Fisher F-series forum we have a newbie swinging an F70 somewhere in Kentucky who has been finding silver right and left!, so kick out the 30 years experience he's landed some near virgin turf!!! (I'm tempted to invade his turf, he can't be that far away LoL)
When I started out metal detecting I thought "Oh Boy, I know all these great places where as kids we hung out to metal detect" well, not so good!! yea, in theory it was good sound thinking, but the actual return was pretty much a big (O).
They are still some good hunting spots around, but in most places they're fewer than what a lot of people think. The best thing I could suggest is to, (for older silver coins)
Dig in and sample some sites!
Look for some Wheat cents, (or even those beaver tail pull & toss tabs) that helps to date an area.
Now for clad,
Check out the ball fields, especially the parking area's and around the concessions area, sidelines at the football and soccer fields.
Tot lots and fair grounds.
