deep and dissapearing target

My buddy and I were out hunting last night, I had my AT Pro, he has an older (but very effective) Whites machine. I had a faint, but repeatable silver tone signal, VDI around 83. It gave a soft, omg-this is a coin type signal. So I dug a nice hole. I have a Garrett pin pointer, no coin. Nada. I Swept the hole again. AT says its still there. Dug some more. Probed some more. Rich brought his machine-no signal. I get a here now, then gone signal. I dug some more, then totally lost the signal. Result-no coin-no trash-big hole. Hmmmm. Check again. The signal was back. Then gone....

Im going back as soon as this rain stops, maybe the rain soaking in the hole will help me find what ever this machine thinks is there. Dunno. But, it sure is fun.

Anyone else have this happen? I have seen this on degrading clad coins, like at the beach, but not in nice ground in the mountain areas. There is almost no trash and we have found no clad at this part of the site, but my buddy did find 2 barber dimes and 2 wheaties just 30 feet from me.

Honestly, I think that there is something there. I cranked up the sensitivity and ran gb a few times. I want to try it again and manually gb to lower numbers and see if it affects it.

Ideas? Should I just forget this one? Nope, gonna hit it again.

I would go back and dig till I found out what it was. I am thinking large iron deep. Did you try pinpoint mode to see if it was still there.

What the AT Pro was picking up was a small piece of very rusted iron. When you finally got to it with the digger, it disinfected into a powder, which could no longer be picked up with the coil. All metal detectors experience this occasionally. :( Or....it was a tiny flat conductive piece, only able to be picked up with the coil when laying horizontal to the coil. So, each time you disturbed the soil, it changed position.

The consensus seems to be iron. I've had almost the same thing happen. Turned out to be these tiny iron filings, almost invisible which had turned the same color as the soil.

I have had it happened a lot up here, the target is real deep, I have dug down a foot and have the signal disappear, then on the next scoop, the signal is in the pile

I havent had iron give me a good signal response, but, I have seen the rusty materials before and noticed that they can fade out completely once they are dug. I have had that happen. I hope to get back there soon, its been raining here all day. Maybe tomorrow..

Thanks for the responses.

[size=large]along with the other suggestions check the back of your digging tool. just a simple idea. i've lost targets i know were there and through stumbling around found them sticking to my digging tool. they can play peek-a - boo.

It sounds like a deep target to me thats been there a long time, what these targets do is build up a materialised halo around them that the detector picks up and sometimes when you disturb the halo the target becomes weaker and harder to identify,it is very common with gold detecting and sometimes the target disappears until you take a few more inches off,If your out in the woods dig yourself a wider deeper hole:surrender:and I think it will show its head, one thing about the pro is if it says there is something hiding down there most times there is,I have persevered with the same thing and have been rewarded in the end,you sometimes loose sleep over such signals and wonder what it could be,I always end up digging them just for peace of mind, good luck, hope its something good

Garrenty it is Deep Big IRON been there done that  and please let us know what it is yellerstang

I went back to the disappearing target hole last night. Nothing there this time. Maybe a halo effect, dunno. I swept the whole area very carefully, tried some different settings, but no signal.
