Decisions,Decisions on AT Pro Series

I am mostly a coin and jewelry hunter. Hunt parks, schools and homes. Used to hunt the woods
until they outlawed it. I am looking to add one of these units to my arsenal.I am wanting to water
hunt now and these units are waterproof. Will still continue to hunt my usual ways more so than
water hunting on the shores of Chicago. So my question is do I get the AT Gold for it's Iron resolution
which I feel would be a little better feature than the Iron resolution on the AT Pro. I know they run
at different frequency's. So you guys that have used one for a bit what do you feel would be the
better unit for fresh water hunting, dry sand, wet sand? I have read up much on both units and they
are surely different animals. The thing I like is I.D. in all metal on the Gold and it's Iron resolution to help
unmask more targets but has no notch like the AT Pro. All input is deeply appreciated and if your in
Chicago and want to water hunt "GIVE ME A HOLLER". Thanks for looking and comments!!!

I'll say up front I have no AT Gold experience but my hunting is very similar to yours and own the AT Pro with absolutely no regrets. Either model would suit your needs and it really comes down to cost and particular features you believe you want/need. The AT Gold seems to be the choice for gold prospecting and/or hunting in very highly mineralized soil where you need the additional ground balancing features.

For the cost difference and my own personal experience, I "think" that the AT Pro features are probably more than adequate for the type of hunting you plan on doing but it's really a matter of personal choice..

I'm not convinced that the differences in frequencies or Iron resolution would ever be noticeable unless you were conducting a side by side test. Iron discrimination in the AT Pro is very nice. As far as "fresh water", sand, and wet sand they would work equally well. The AT Pro works identically well in all those situations (water, sand, wet sand). It's just like hunting dry land. To me, the largest difference in the Pro/Gold is in their ability to ground balance and that need all comes down to soil conditions. I've never had a mineralization problem here in the New England that the AT Pro can't handle (and I also use it in salt water).

As far as AT Pro "zero discrimination" vs AT Gold "True all metal mode" .... I understand the technical differences but for me.the AT Pro is perfectly adequate.

I mostly hunt in Zero Discrimination mode but I really like the ability to discriminate, especially in the trashy areas or at the end of a long day when maybe I'm tired of digging junk so I set up discrimination to cherry pick certain targets.

As for coil differences, for most of my hunting I much prefer either the 5x8 or 4.5" sniper coil but the AT Pro came with the 8.5x11 so the 5x8 was additional cost. The AT Gold comes stock with the 5x8.

I upgraded from an ACE 250 (which I still use and like) to the AT Pro. At the time, cost wasn't a concern and after doing all the research, I just felt that the AT Pro was a better match for my needs. I even considered getting one of each but It might have cost me my life when I got home LOL.

Happy Shopping!

We share the same interest I think you're better of with the AT PRO. Learn the machine and you won't ever go with another one...trust me I know. Good luck.

Your statement is disturbing about the woods being outlawed? I love hunting in the woods where ever I can find them. I am curious to their reasoning. It is not like you are hurting the grass...I believe Mr.John - Edmonton covered it well with his detailed chart. Now you just need to purchase one and get out hunting! I will say they have a fast reset speed which makes them phenomenal for working in iron infested areas. Also when working in iron I love enabling the IRON AUDIO feature. I truly love it and you will know when you scan over something non-ferrous. I once mistakenly turned this feature off and it wasn't the same. I like hearing all the iron grunts and low tones as it gives the user so much more info and I can hear those "just audible" high tones squeaking through. Don't get me wrong, it does false on iron (high tones) and have dug my share...However, I have learned some of the characteristics of iron falsing. They just don't register consistently as a high tone as I swing across the target in question. They almost have a "ghost" type of response as well. In other words, they are just not "tight" in response like a coin object and the tone kinda "drifts" not consistent like a coin object. This "ghost" type of signal will also sorta drift off from where the target really is. I hit the target in question from 5 or 6 different angles and perform little "baby wiggles" to really hone in and isolate the signal. When I carry this maneuver out, I find there is no good signal to be found and usually just grunts. Not so with an object such as a coin. If there is a "true" non-ferrous item there, I usually receive a nice repeat signal saying "dig me". Hard to explain but once you get some time with it in iron, maybe you will better understand what I am saying here. Make sure you pick up the 5x8 coil. For me, it is basically the only coil I use. Perfect all-around coil and good separation abilities. The machine is super light and I have swung it for 5-6-7 hours a day will minimal fatigue. I have hearing loss. When I use proportional audio on the AT Pro, I am sure there might be some deep coin objects I am missing but the proportional audio to me is "extremely telling" of the depth of the item(s) in the ground compared to the standard BEEP. I would throw it out the car window if that's all it had lol. I really have come to enjoy using the machine and surprised at its capabilities. I believe you will be well pleased. - Jim

ive used both and have owned the gold out of the two the gold is the better machine. the audio is smoother and in the woods ,throw that puppy in am iron audio on and run ur disc up. then u get 2 tone all metal. all metal is much deeper by my estimation. the 5x8 is much better for woods detecting. if notch is important to u then maybe the pro is the better option

How can you run disc if you are in all metal?

its not disc its a tone break of sorts . the disc level adjust where the iron audio starts. would run am sometimes ,turn iron audio on and run disc to 44 and dig everything that beeped knowing it wasnt iron. i never used it in trashy areas tho

How can they outlaw the hunting of privately owned woods. State or Federal owned I understand byt there are acres and acres of privately owned woods.

Now it's a waiting game for machine to arrive. Can't wait
to give her a run thru the paces. Have 2 coils coming
with both sets of headphones and adapter.I mainly use that
machine from France. I love it. I recovered much with it
where some of those E-T guys have been. Now I want to
see what this machine will do in my heavy Iron spot.
Getting PUMPED!!! This fall I will be on the waterfronts
of Chicago trying a new style of treasure hunting. In the Water...
Thanks for all the INPUT!

WHAT MACHINE DID YOU CHOOSE?

Great investment you won't regret it...FYI while most other detectors are dropping in price I notice the AT PRO hold its value very well.... that should tell you something. Good luck and post your finds.
