Deciding between the dfx or mxt

Hello everyone I have a few questions for you. I mostly coin hunt and sometimes relic hunt my choices have come down to either the whites mxt or whites dfx. I hear the dfx has a long learning curve and it will not go as deep as the mxt. The mxt is a single tone detector and I am having a hard time choosing between the two. I like the dfx also and from what I am told it is a coin killer and has multiple tones. Same thing can be said for the mxt but I don't nugget hunt so I would never use the nugget mode on the mxt. I really don't want to be stuck with something I would end up not liking. I live in Mississippi so the soil is not to bad or high in minerals. Can you help me out please

MXT is a good all around user friendly detector while the DFX has a long learning period for the average detectorist.

By the way the MXT has a setup where it can be a two tone unit but DFX has multiple tones..As far as going deeper whoever told you an MXT will go deeper than a DFX
as its not a truism if your talking to an ardent DFX user.

In addendum if you are a newer detectorist MXT without even thinking but if you have several years under your belt and willing to take the time to learn certainly a DFX of course depending on your financial situation as a DFX is more expensive..

Lets face it some of us are tweakers and some like turn on and go and as I said before thats why Whites makes so many models to satisfy all its customers...

If you decide to go the MXT route you may want to consider the M6 instead. It has the multi-tone feature if you prefer that and doesn't have the prospecting mode which you say you'll never need. Other than that it's the same machine as the MXT except for the shaft style. All feedback says it's a great coin machine.

I can't compare the 2 machines other than what I read and researched before I decided on the mxt.
The mxt is simple to learn because everything about it is straight forward it has knobs to adjust for hunting and toggle switch to select the mode you want to use for hunting.
I live in W. TN and the ground around here is prob similar to yours it's not to bad and I have had no prob at all detecting any where I have been to the only thing I did and would recommend is get a smaller coil with it if you want to hunt areas that has a lot of trash.
It does take a little getting use to which I imagine would be the same with any new detector but after I started to understand the mxt I can say I am happy with it and I wouldn't trade it for anything else even for a more expensive model I like things simple just turn on adjust to the area and go.
Even though I don't go gold prospecting either that mode is good to get more information such as getting the ground reading plus if you read up on the mxt you'll find with it's high gain it is very sensitive to small items such as gold chains and rings at some very impressive depth.
I think for what you want either the dfx or the mxt will serve you well and I don't think you would be disappointed in either one because they have both proved to be top of the line metal detectors with both making some awesome finds.

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your decision.

Thanks y'all I am leaning towards the dfx I think it is a detector that I would not out grow and I would continue to grow with. I already had my mind set on one of the two. I thought ahead and bought a 6x10 dd eclipse and a 4x6 dd eclipse shooter coil extra lower rod coil covers etc etc. So now I need a detector and within a few days I will make a decision. If I decide to go with the dfx I will just use the pre-programed settings until I get accustom to it. Ive watched videos until my eyes went crossed I like to do a lot of research before I buy. Either one will be a good choice I think. I have a dealer close to me and I will see if he will let me demo both of them.

Good idea Delta. You can't go wrong with either Whites machine. If you pick one and decide later you want to try the other you'll have no problem selling/trading. There's plenty of hunters that like both units. I would never part with my MXT but I know that the DFX is a formidable machine in the right hands. Let us know how it turns out.

If you are not ready for an advanced programmable detector, I would recommend the MXT. Dollar for dollar, the MXT is one of the best buys for an easy to use detector. You can always move up to the DFX later if you feel the need, but the DFX is NOT for everyone. If tone ID is an important feature, you might want to wait for a month and get the new MXT Pro...........food for thought.

Larry I hear whites is coming out with the mxt pro soon. Sounds like a winner cant wait to hear the reviews. Now as far as coins will the mxt hunt coins especially silver as well as the dfx? Thanks for all the help y'all.

It is more about the operator of the detector than the detector itself. The DFX in the hands of someone who knows how to use it is a great detector, in the hands of someone who doesn't have a clue.......worthless. The same can be said about the MXT except the MXT can be learned and mastered in a much shorter period of time. My Nancy is the Moderator of the MXT forum and I wouldn't be able to pry the MXT out of her hands in favor of another machine. I might also add that she is tough competition when we are hunting together, she doesn't miss much. I have used the DFX for 10 years and now the V3 and if I didn't get so involved with the high end machines, including the Minelabs, I too would probably be using the MXT..........

I can't fault any of the suggestions concerning which machine. To me, it's how much detecting can I do with the least fuss and bother which equals the MXT or the M6. Not knocking the DFX, I just prefer to be hunting, not tweaking.

I here you. I do not like menus or tweaking 2000 adjustments. I like all controls in site. I have hunted with others that really didn't know their machine that had all the fancy features. They would adjust everything to try to keep up with my simple machines. I look at it like this. I like to fish. When I fish with my friends they are always asking how I catch so many fish? I simply say that my lure's in the water. Meaning - they are casting 5 or 6 times then tying a new lure. Or tangled up in a tree. Or build a bird nest on their spool. I simply know my lure, rod and reel and fish! He who has his lure in the water most will catch the most fish. Simple rules. In my opinion the M6 and Mxt "ARE" top of the line machines. The new Mxt pro looks to me to have all that anyone could need.

A common mistake with beginners and tweekers with the DFX and other programmable detectors. Once the DFX is set for your ground and hunting style, it becomes a turn on and go hunting machine. The adjustments are there for you to fine tune the detector to the various ground conditions around the world and the personal preferences of each individual user. Once set, you turn it on, ground balance and hunt.............

I prefer analog machines...I like to see all the controls, and I also like the idea of being able to mod my machines if I so choose...My next machine will be a 5900 or 6000 Di Pro or XL Pro...If I do decide to go digital, I will probable get an M6 or MXT Pro

I picked up the mxt from my dealer and I like it so far. Tried both the dfx and the mxt at the dealer and the mxt just felt better don't know why. Took it home and installed my 6x10 coil mounted on an extra rod and played with it awhile. It cancels pull tabs and aluminum pretty well. I also pick up Jeff Fosters book and ordered a sun ray probe from Ralph. Cant wait to go hunting and see whats in the ground my dealer said if he had a choice between the dfx and mxt he would pick the mxt. He seemed like he was a straight shooter after all he could have sold me the dfx which cost more but he did not. I like an honest dealer or person rather. From what I have been told the mxt will hunt coins just as well as the dfx and that's what I wanted to hear. And I appreciate all the advice you all have giving me and it help me to make my decision . Thanks.

Personally I think you made a great choice DD. Although I've never used a DFX, I know the MXT is a great machine and easy to learn. If you ever feel you've "maxed out" with the MXT for any reason or find that you want to explore the potential of a machine you can tweak more, you can always move to the DFX. BTW- Jeff Foster's book you picked up may be one of the most valuable accessories you get. Loaded with valuable, practical info. Even a relatively simple machine needs to be set up and run properly to maximize it's effectiveness. Good luck and let us know how you do.

You made the right decision. The MXT is simple and powerful. I have tried several DFX's, Explorer II and SE as much as I wanted to like them the MXT just was way easier to use. I love knobs over push buttons and menus. One look and you can verify if your setting are what they should be. With menus you can be off a mile for the area, hunt all day and never know it. You can learn enough to start detecting and be effective in a few minutes with the MXT.

I use Alkaline AA and get good life although I haven't carefully checked the hours. Since I picked up my pro pointer my battery life has been greatly extended cuz I often turn off the MXT and zero in on the find with the PP.

Think I will stay with the disposable batteries for now and see how It goes. Waiting on my sun ray probe to come in. I do need a good digging tool I was looking at a lesale digging tool how ever you spell it an it got good reviews. I tried Walmart looked in the camping section but did not see what I wanted. I would like to find a fold up shovel like the army issue one. Need something lite that I can carry on my motorcycle when I go detecting.
