decided to try something.......

It has been so hot and dry that I haven't done any detecting in a while.
So this morning I decided to walk up to the old homestead behind my house and give it a shot with the 1236x2.
After a short time I'm cooking as it is already about 95 and it was only 10am.
So I decided to try looking at it as if I lived there.
I started looking around and thinking, if I lived in this miserable shack in 1920, where would I be on a hot day like this.
There are 2 huge oak trees nearby and their shadows overlap in a area about 20 yards from the house.
I decided to hunt that shadowed area.
Well it paid off in sorts.... mostly a bunch of junk....
A bunch of misc crap, some modern bullets, a few coverall buttons, few buckles, and a nice surprise..
I popped 2 eagle buttons out of seperate holes in this area.
They were about 6" down in dirt hard as a rock.
I don't know why I've never liked that 1236x2 because it sure has found me a lot of good buttons over the years.

These buttons are different than any I've ever found, and I've found quite a few over the years.
They look to be 2 piece, all metal, but they are VERY VERY heavy and almost feel like they are solid, or lead filled.
The front details are deeper than any other buttons I've found.
Unfortunately the backs are to corroded to make out a back mark.
Oh well.... I'm still pleased with this find considering I found them almost in my back yard. Can't wait for some rain !!
Have a great day everyone !!!

thanks Craig... I have a number of Great Seal buttons...
some with datable backmarks and some without.
What makes these unusual is the weight...
each one is as heavy as a large fishing sinker.
I've never dug a button this size that is this heavy.
No matter -- they are a good find and nobody has lived
on this homestead for better than 50 yrs so they are at
least that old.
Maybe I'll use them for fishing.
