Decided to give the "Ole XL 500" a face lift.

Got this off of one of the auction sites and decided to restore it. As you can tell by the before pictures it was not in the best of shape to say the least. Water had entered the unit and did some damage to the circuit board and corroded some of the components. The battery was also shot and had leaked. I also re-built the coil supports from an old Garrett coil I had laying around. The unit now works great but I need to build a good set of headphones for it. Here are the before pictures.

If your wondering what the Whites Dual Field picture is doing on here it's because it works great on the XL 500 and increases the depth two fold.

Mel, I have two that are my origional water machines! They still work and are kept in reserve as my back up machines should my Dual Field fail. (Hasn't in going on three years!!)

How does the XL w/DF coil compare to the Dual Field?

These old XL-500 PIs paid for thenselves several times over in the "80s.
and I could not part with them!

hi MEL fantastic idea to put Whites Dual Field coil on the XL500 I would like to know can you get them from Whites accessories or did you get the coil off another machine just wondering if whites would sell them as accessories ? many thanks. eloros

hi MEL i got the dual field coil. please can you tell me if i have to put the metal washer that you get with the XL500 on the end of the shaft. as with the garrett ? many thanks
