Decided on X-70

Ancient Dave

New member
After a few weeks of research and reading all I could find on MD's I have decided to get the X-70 as my first MD. I'm not sure it can be classed as an entry level MD but since I'm not really sure what kind of detecting I will enjoy most, I think the X-70 will cover whatever path I take. The X-70 has been ordered so now I just wait. I have already downloaded the manual and have read it twice, I have viewed the X-Terra CD that I got from Minelab, and now I will be reading all the FAQ's at the top of this X-Terra forum. Nothing beats hands on experience but when the unit arrives I'll be ready. I'm sure I'll have my share of questions once I dive into the various features of this machine. I also picked up a Vibra-Probe.

Congrats on the X-70! You will enjoy it, I am sure. You sound like me prior to getting mine. I read and watched the same stuff.
Good luck with the detector and enjoy, Beale.

Welcome to the hobby Dave, first prerequisite is to make it fun, that's rule number one, and always refer back to rule number one. If you've done a lot of reading on various forums you will have noticed that sometimes the hardcore detectoristas will get a little contentious(guilty ), but don't let that put you off.

Start off slow and don't have overly ambitious expectations, the finds posted routinely by say Bavaria Mike, would be the finds of a lifetime for a US based hunter. A good place to start is your own yard, or green space with some coins thrown over a target free area, that you've checked in All Metal beforehand . Some people like to throw an old towel over the coins, or tape them to the back side of a piece of cardboard.

Practice your coil swing, keep the coil about one inch above the surface and parallel to the ground, DO NOT allow the coil to rise in an arc at the end of your swings. I've seen hunters develop this bad habit from day one and never be able to break it. It will feel a little unnatural, but position your feet and hips while adjusting coil rod length to fit you. It's kind of like putting a scope on a new rifle, you want to adjust it for proper eye relief, good sight picture, and proper strap length to naturally wrap for a quick standing freehand shot.

Don't be afraid to ask any kind of question, you'll get an answer, and maybe your chain yanked once in awhile.

But certainly is user friendly even for a newbie..It can handle local parks or perhaps those old place where the deepies are so you can grow with it..Remember no dumb questions just those too dumb to ask them and even though you did your homework going to take some time in the field to attain some degree of efficiency. Good choice and do remember this hobby is soooo addictive..

What is your opinion on the Halo theory??? :starwars:

Down but not out!

Thanks everyone. I really found the information at the top under FAQ to be valuable. I feel like it flattened out the learning curve and will give me a jump start. I especially liked how Digger related the numerical TID to a compos rose as opposed to a straight line. This makes things much more clear and explains the high reading for some ferrous targets. I think besides doing some testing on various objects in the back yard, I will probably start my hunting in the all metal mode and dig everything so I can get a feel for what the MD is telling me about a wide range of targets. Then I may feel more comfortable about notching out unwanted targets. I guess we'll see once I get started. Can't wait........

The other day when I was taking a picture of that Buck I was thinking to myself, "Now if this were one of them good'ol boys in Michigan, this lens would have a cross hair and there'd be the sound of an electric knife sharpener in the background. 'Cause we all know they do their Thanksgiving shopping with a 30-30.":rofl::rofl::poke:

Sorry, I couldn't resist. But with you laid up, maybe you'll have to use one of them Ginsu electric knives to do the carving this year. You want maybe I should tell the story about how the old man was gassed one Turkey day when the electric knife was broken, and he used the band saw?:rofl::rofl:

Don't worry 'cause the blade was sterilized with Jim Beam first, that'll kill anything.

of the buck I thought the same thing.. that would be 30-30 time in Michigan! There seems to be a lot of nice bucks around here this year, more than usual for some reason. I saw a nice 8 point just the other day while out for a ride to fight off the boredom.

Jim Beam does help! Better than Old Crow!

Please do, tell us the story about the bandsaw.
