Decent quality headphones and my reasoning......

Finally decided that i am going too treat myself to some Black Widow Headphones, the reason i went for these specific one's was not that i have hearing problems but they cut out most of the external noises and hence i am thinking i can hear those real feint deep signals that i may have missed with my normal headphones which i may add was not a cheap set either.

Been doing a fair amount pof homework on headphones and especially when used in my type of detrecting enviroment and the Widows ticks all the boxes,my way of thinking is that we can spend a massive amount of money on modern detector then use a el-cheapo set of headphones, very similar i guess like have a top flight stereo system then have a set of Radio Shack speakers attached.

Have i made the right decision and am i right in my way of thinking about decent headphones,i am almost certain i am right.

Any input would be not only helpful to myself but possibly opther as well.

They will work well for especially for those machine that have a low audio threshold which you can barely hear. And the limiter will then limit the audio level of surface targets.
Always nice to have a dedicated set of headphones.

I hunt with a Tesoro Tejon, so sound is the only thing I use to decide to dig or not. I use Grey Ghost headphones most of the time but when I need to hear my surroundings or it's just too hot to wear them I use the lightweight foam cup headphones with a Koss 20 volume control and a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter plug to fit my detector. There is a big difference in sound between the two. The Grey Ghosts are amazing headphones, I can hear the subtleties that the lightweight headphones miss. My lightweight headphones are Koss PortaPros (about $40), they're good headphones for music but miss a lot on a metal detector.

I haven't tried them all, but have become a believer in higher quality headphones after comparing them to the cheaper "giveaway phones" that often come with detectors. It's amazing to me that some actually normally hunt without phones.

I use the SunRay pro Golds, they have a high volume limiter that can be turned on or off, with this you can run the detectors volume at max, get full audio boost on the very faint responses but on the shallow targets the excess volume is "clipped".

I swing a Sovereign Gt which is a tones only machine. I use Killer B II phones as they have volume controls for each ear. Quality headphones make a great difference in what you can hear. By cutting down the outside noise and giving better tonal response you will be surprised at the targets you have missed due to not being able to hear them.

By all Means get yourself a quality pair of headphones. The Bw's are quality phones.

For me this is as important if you are serious about finding the deep and better stuff and you want them to block out as much outside noise too and yet be comfortable. My hearing is real bad so I need the volume too to hear those weak signals and with my Sovereigns I feel i do very well with a good set. Now to find a good set and ones that will work the best for you and work the best with your detector, I have tried many different sets and found on the Sovereign the Timberwolfs work the best for me, but on my Explorers they were not as loud, so found the Troy Pros worked the best for volume, and yes I did try the Black Widows which are good, but not enough volume for me on the Sovereign or the Explorers. I do use a Uni Probe made by Detector Pro which makes the Black Widow on my CTX because of the probe and they seem to work OK for me. Now a guy i know let me try his set of Bushmasters made for a dealer by Detector Pro with is the first set that will work on all of my detectors I have tried that has great volume on all of them, so I have a pair of them too, so I believe I have the ones that will work the best for me.
One more thing on headphones is that the biggest problem with any headphones is the cable breaking when you probably need them the most and why I like Detector Pros idea of the NDT which has the replaceable cord, so you carry a extra cord in your detector supplies and change it right in the Field to save the day and then order a extra cord in so you always have a spare when you need it.
