Dealing with Frustration

Reading Outatime's recent post about "It ain't for lack of trying" got me to wondering how some of you deal with the frustration when the gold just isn't coming up. In other words, what "mind set" works best for you when you're in a slump. It has usually been my experience that the harder you try, the less the gold seems to appear which is very frustrating in and of itself.

I used to hunt with an experienced hunter that once told me "It will come out when it's ready." I never forgot that statement and that is what I fall back on and calms me down when I get discouraged.

I know you guys aren't shrinks, but what works best for you when you are in a slump?

I hunt mainly turf, but slumps aren't confined solely to water hunting. Obviously, most turf hunters don't ever find as much gold as do water hunter, but day's on end without silver can be frustrating for us. I simply try to remember this is just a fun hobby and it is just great to be out hunting. When I least expect it, silver or gold comes along. But, when it doesn't, I am still out doing something I enjoy. HH jim tn

[size=medium]Gold and Silver are scarce in these parts. Therefore, when I go out it's with the expectations of "What will I find?", not "How much gold will I get".

I don't anticipate finding anything of value, that way when it does show up I'm even more thrilled. I don't mind finding the pull tabs and coins as that's part of the hobby and they make detecting fun.

To me it's the thrill of the hunt and getting out in the fresh air that makes this hobby interesting, not trying to figure out how much gold will I get today. When it comes, it comes. Until then enjoy the hunt.

An old man I know told me this true-ism.

You will find it at the last place you look.

I always think of that when I get into a slump.

That is a true-ism you can sink your teeth into. Thanks for sharing that.

TENACIOUS PERSEVERENCE! That is my word for you today harvdog! I have 2 such crappy streaks on record. The 1st one took me 25 straight hunts with no gold, the 2nd and most recent began late '07 and went all the way into '08 and it went 27 straight. My advise to you is, enjoy the thrill of the hunt. If you can do that, then the gold will show again, savvy?

The past year our beaches have been heavily sanded in... go hunt a beach or area others won't because its hard digging... go find a jetty or an area full of rocks and mud and hunt there... you may find a lot of trash but you will find gold others are too lazy to look for in these area's.. its why I am successful.. I hunt the hard area's and leave the easy spots alone... sure I could hunt those easy spots but I choose not to anymore...

I haven't been posting much because I haven't hunted much since last year... I think I have 3 hunts since November of 08 and 2 out of the three times out I found gold because I was hunting in the rocks and mud... :)

If you have jetties go hunt around them... sometimes women will walk out on them and throw their rings off of them... ;) I've found 8 gold rings this way...

See which way the currents and the wind take the water and hunt upstream from there... I hunt all my beaches this way now...

Hunting alone and not finding gold is frustrating, but you have to be patient and continue. Having a buddy finding gold while you don't is a killer. Especially if your partner has more than one. I can see the face of my hunting buddy when i strike gold and he isn't. His griding gets clumsy, he's swinging the coil like there is no tomorrow and goes very fast to cover the most ground possible... leaving some more gold in his path. Imagine his pain when i dig some where he just passed like a thunder craft !
Well about the same will happen to me if the roles are reversed. In those times, it take a lot of mind control to force yourself to slow down and pay more attention to what your detections is saying that to look at what your partner does.

So all in all, frustration is a good test of maturity and only when you can control it that you cant detect with patience and method and ensure yourself some nice goodies. Of course, luck will always be a part of that hobby and for that my friend, well there is no recipe... except maybe living a good life and hoping God will reward you for it :)!!

Digging isn't about what you find it's about the Hunt, anticipation of finding things......... I use a Pi md on the beach I probably dig 40-50 targets a night 98% are junk some times 100% are junk but it's the thrill of digging something that may be good.......Mding isn't a job it's about having fun, fresh air,and spending time with friends. remember you already have Enought pressures in life don't add another one:stretcher:

Thanks for that great reply Graig.

There is a muddy beach with a lot of history close to where I live that I have always shyed away from. Now I'm gonna get some booties and the next low tide I'm going to go sliming around in the mud.

Thanks again,

James
