DD1400 vs. DD 10x6

Hello All,

I have the MXT and relic hunt specifically. I often find myself in highly mineralized ground (VA & MD), so, my DD 1400 helps considerably. But, it is heavy and after a few hours, my elbow is throbbing. How much will I lose, if any, by dropping down to the DD 6 x 10? Thanks for your input.

You'll probably lose about an inch or two. In bad ground I've found that the 6X10 is effective to about 8"-9". I've not used the DD1400, but I've heard that in bad ground its about equal to the stock coil in good ground (10"-11" on average).

I've used both and in my experience the only benefit with the 1400 is that you're covering more ground per sweep. Depth is about the same as the 10x6 (or even a little less) because you normally have to dial back gain in order to maintain stability with the larger coil whereas with the smaller coil you can increase gain.. If I recall Jeff Foster supports and illustrates this in his book on the MXT. Get a 10x6 and crank it up.

I've got a 6x10 and may trade you if you are interested. vamangano@yahoo.com will get the quickest reply. Thanks

I agree 100% with Horsesoldier. The larger coil (in most cases) your only gaining more coverage more than you are depth. You may get couple more inches in some areas but for the most part the larger coil is for coverage. An alternative I use is the 12" Hotshot coil, it is lighter and covers the area very quickly. Oh...and by the way...at the end of the day, I don't care what your swing'n, your arm feels like it's going to fall off regardless of coil size. Once I have located a campsite I then switch to the 6x10 dd and really work the area slooooooow! :)

I use hip mount for all my huge coils. I hook my shoulder and waist straps to plastic zip ties, one the slot in the arm cuff and another in front of the box tied around the shaft right behind the knob you tighten on the coil rod. Works great, can go all day with no fatigue.
I can tell you my 10x14 excellerator goes way deep in the sand around here and gave me two gold rings last summer. Coins have a soft small sound where large stuff like deep cans sound like normal coins. Takes a bit of getting use to.
