DD coil vs. scorcher or imaging?

would someone please explain the advantages/disadvanges to using DD coils. yea, i am still around, mostly using ball fields as a learning tool and finding alittle clad in the process. Any thoughts much appreciated

Used the 5x10 on my 1500. Not as deep as the stock coil but covers ground better/quicker. Likes bottlecaps, hits them like coins.

Pinpointing can be a challenge with the longer detecting area... I would turn 90 degrees and "X" over the target.

Supposed to handle mineralized ground better but hard to see the difference where I hunt. Wet beaches still a problem, even with this coil.

Not a bad coil, just different!

The DD coils are handy because they seperate targets much better. If you can imagine your std coils are making a round pattern on the ground just like the shape of the thing. The DD coil elip 5 by 10 or 10 by 14 are making a pattern like a knife blade long and narrow. This cuts down on the number of targets it covers at one time but in the sweep it covers the same or more ground. Hope Im not confusing you, as I have wrote you before you probally know Im good at confusing myself. Anyhow the DD coils on 2500 are really good in trashy areas. If it is really trashy the little 4.5 will cover even less ground and also goes even less in depth. What we do is use nearly always the 10 by 14 then if there is to many targets to keep them straight we go to the 5 by 10 and when it really gets crowded we go to the 4.5 and hardly ever use the imag coils. Loosing the image part of the coil has not bothered me very often.
To pinpoint with the little guy 4.5 is real easy just move each way and make an X in your mind. The DD are pretty easy to you can either turn 90 deg. and go a second time to make an ex or John has some pointers on going side to side till the signal is the loudest then drag the coil back toward you till the signal stops and its under the front center of the coil. I used both but the drag method is not for me because of my poor hearing, I cant tell good enough where the signal ends and causes me to be off a bit so I X the targets.
If you are doing ball fields and such without to many trash targets you can get it covered with the 10 by 14 in much less time.

Good Luck

One other thing on the sins. setting on the DD I have found if it is beeping and such at the swing end the way to set it for the area is lower it till you can swing up sideways close to a chain link
fence and not have it go off till you nearly touch the fence. Seems to me the DD coil cuts a knife pattern and then start putting off a glo around the entire coil when it is set to high, turning it down first eliminates the glow so to speak then you only have the knife pattern , if you go lower then you loose depth.
Good Luck again.

much appreciated gang, one more duh question then i will let you get back to your detecting....would either of my 4.5 5x10 scorcher coils be considered DD ?

DD coils are designed for high mineralization. If you do not have that then the standard 12-inchj coil will serve you just as well. The DD does not discriminate well and loves bottle caps. Go to
losttreasure.com where I have a field test on the DD coil.

DD Coils or widescans advantage...
* Large window
* Smoother Ground Response
* Less Overload

Imaging Coils
* Sizing of Target
* Better Discrimination
* Quieter operation with near by magnetic interference
* Deeper
