Daytona hunt questions?

alton

New member
I've about decided to go to the Daytona hunt April 27-29.

I've been to inland hunts before, but not to the beach hunt. One of the restrictions is that the scoop handle be no longer than 38".

I'm trying to decide what shoes to wear, what kind (fast or what, I don't think my Excal would be the best choice) detector to use (all hunts are on the beach), what scoop, is there a better hotel than the others, and generally some good advice from those that has been to this hunt or similar hunts.

I'm not going for the competitive part. I'm too old and fat to be fast enough to win anything. I'm going for the fun part and the learning. I want to be comfortable but effective in finding a few things.

Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated!

TIA Alton

Even though the excal is a fine detector, it will not be a good choice for the Hunt. If you have a Tesoro Silver umax, Cibola, Minelab Xterra 30, Shadow X-2, 3 or 5 that would be the way to go. Lite weight and fast As far as motels, I have a week reservation at the Hunt Motel. There are less expensive places around but don't know the namesI'm not going for the competitive part. I will have my usual tables as always and if you want to stop by, I can maybe help you along. Hope to see ya there. HH, Ron@ Dixie MD

I've gone the last few years. It's a lot of fun. You will enjoy it.

I usually use a long handled scoop in the "real world," but for competition hunts, I use either a short handled scoop or a handheld scoop. I strongly suggest you get a competition basket. You can probably get one at the event, or you can do what I did last year and order one from Kellyco before the event.

I think sneakers are best. I also have an Excal, but it's new and I wouldn't recommend it for competition hunting. I use my Fisher CZ-70, but run into a lot of interference (falsing) from other Fisher's, which is a real pain. You might want to consider getting a Tesoro Silver Max. I've heard that they are light and good for such hunts.

Regarding not being thin or young enough to expect to win prizes, that isn't the case. All it takes is for you to be lucky enough for your detector to go over a token. There are 50 of them in the large prize category. All you need is one. You could surprise yourself! So, go and have fun. And you might be a big winner! Good luck!

Alton; Last year was my first Daytona hunt,I found 76 silver coins ,I won a $5 Gold coin and a new Detector. As far as huntting go I weigh 300 pounds. I had a lot of fun, met a lot of new freinds. Don't use a excal or big detector, a Little detector is better. tennis shoes are great. if you any more ? call me or E-Mail me. junklord3139@comcast.net

As you know, I have the F75 now, and I've used the DFX before with good results.

If I go, I'll look for your table.

Thanks Ron for your help.
