Day out

Ken (Australia)

New member
Hi all. Geoff and I took the Quattro's out for a spin a couple of days ago looking for an old country racecourse. We didn't find it. Know the approximate location but just couldn't hit it. Now waiting for a friend to send me a photograph taken in the 20's to get our bearings. Day wasn't a complete loss. Went to an old homesite a short distance away. Geoff got a couple of predecimals and rising sun hat badges and I get a few silvers and free Palmolive soap token. Thanks for looking.............Ken.:ausflag:

Go get em there Ken.!!!! Great to hear form someone on this site, these days, and to me, it's always a pleasure to hear from you. You always post good stuff, and is very interesting. You know,I was almost gonna suggest to you to write a book on your successful techniques, because to me your that successful, but then again, you've already shared with us a lot of those techniques in the past posts on this site. Good goin' there fella, and keep up the good work, and keep sharing those great pictures. Marc Trainor.

Hello Ken. Great post! The Palmolive token is very interesting! As always the pre-decimals are nice finds too. I've also been out several times, got out yesterday and I nearly died in the heat! But I found a very interesting site, one I haven't come across before, and after some exploring through the scrub stumbled upon three old crumbled chimneys, a deep mine shaft, some old gold mine workings and an old tip that had been dug years prior. Lots of interesting relics scattered about like the old iron beds, cauldrons and tools. Once I've clean my finds I'll post what I've found. In the meantime, heading back out htere on Friday. Catch ya! Golden:detecting::)

How ya doin' Golden. Great to see you on the forum, too. I'm glad your taking some valuable time to get out there in the fields too. Love to see what you got. Marc. P.S. which I always understood, meant "post script:", or something added on after the main letter or email. but I dig your little saying you always put on at the end of your posts: "Nothing like holding a piece of history in your hands". You know, that says a lot. Honestly, for us treasure hunters, and even though I'm pretty "lean" in that area, I still know exactly what your saying and have felt it myself on a few finds. I'm a little embarrassed, because you know "darn well", I'm not "doing my part" as an "avid" treasure hunter, but I just thought of another little saying I might start putting at the end of my posts, and I truly believe it's true, and that is: "If it "ain't" under, the coil,,,,, you "ain't" gonna find it". Happy trails and happy hunting to everyone.

i reckon lol, i just finally cracked a florin today, even though it was hit by a mower blade i've now finally cracked all the pre decimals bah the crown and soverign lol

Still looking for the elusive soveriegn myself, but they keep telling me I'm detecting in all the areas.....just haven't swung my coil over the right spot yet. Wouldn't it be nice to have radar that sees through the ground and spots the soveriegns??? Maybe that would take the fun out of detecting for them blindly! Food for thought, I think!!:)

Hi Golden. Both Geoff and I have dug a sovereign, both times they came up at a solid 32. I've dug plenty of 32's since but it's usually chunks of lead. I might never dig another but I'm happy with what I've got...........................Ken.

Thanks for that Ken. My hubby actually bought a full and half sovereign for a dealer about a year ago, primarily because he wanted one of each to swipe under the coil and get a reading so we knew what to listen for, and also to add to his collection of bought pre-decimal coins. We bought several different coins so as to have the readings from when when coin hunting, and it helped a lot. He loves going for the florins, knows the signals and numerical readings for the differing years when using his Explorer. Well, I know what you mean about being happy to find just one, jknowing you've done it! I've yet to get there, but I must say I've found a heap of great relics through the years that have given me great satisfaction. Some of which I donated to a local museum, (as I have more of the same!). But doesn't the lead souns great in the ground!? Has had me fooled a few times, thinking, "gottabe a coin", and it's not!!!!:) Golden :twodetecting:

Hi Golden. Found this one yesterday afternoon at another chinese market garden I've been researching. Found a 1914 photo that shows the garden and two dwellings. Both gone, now its an irrigated lucern paddock. Although its just been cut and baled you can't get the coil any closer than 6 inches to the ground. But at least the ground is soft and easy digging. Had no idea what it was when I took it home. Covered in thick green hard crud, thought it was an 1820's half penny. Let it soak overnite, no better, was about to throw it in the penny tin when I noticed a very small portion of the edge which was milled. Although I'm not that fond of electrolysis I gave it a couple of hits and most of the crud came off to reveal a florin. Like Gary I'm a bit fond of them, must be something from my childhood. It does look a bit better in real life................................Ken.

Helo Ken, nice coin! That's great the crud came off as it did to help you identify the coin. Well, it's drizzling outside today, overcast and cool, but I'm still seriously contemplating going detecting for the day back to the new ground I discovered. I think I'm going to have to take a couple of towels with me as it'd going to be muddy in places, with the rain we had last night. I'm taking the GPS also to mark the spot. Hoping to clear away more trash and relics and see if any coins come to the surface. Maybe a sovereign? Now that would be nice! Here's hoping!....Have you thought about using WD40 to clean the rest of your florin? I find if you let them soak in some, the crud sometimes loosens and comes off easier. It doesn't work for some coins if the crud is too impregnated into the metal, but you never know unless you try. I just spray enough in the bottom of a glass, and drop all my silver coin finds to see if any clean up okay. It's worked well sometimes. Just a thought.
Have a great day. Golden:)
