Day 4 in Virginia, another button for the Idaho Militia...

Day four of our adventure was on Sunday, so we slept in a little later and then went to church with the Cross family. I found Vernon's singing to be inspiring. I thought the rest of day would be spent relaxing around Plantation Vernon, but we changed out of our Sunday-go-to-meetin' clothes and headed out for an afternoon hunt.

Vernon stopped in front of this building on the way and I took a picture of a Civil War cannon ball hole in the side of a building where Grant was staying. The Confederates were lobbing some shells into the town in a last attempt to stop the Union Army from catching up with them. I found it interesting that the hole was still there as a reminder of a time long ago.

We also passed the remains of the railroad track that Sheridan's Cavalry was following to cut of Lees escape to the south. The tracks are gone, but the road bed remains to this day.

We parked by this 1700's tavern to wait for Venron's friend Chris to meet up with us. The Tavern was on the second floor and the ground floor was a stable for the horses. I guess they left the horses in the stable while they were drinking to avoid a "CCUI" (Clippity clopping under the influence) ticket from Her Majesty's State troopers. We wondered if the horses downstairs made the atmosphere in the tavern a little gamey. A very interesting building to be still standing after all this time.
We did at last head out hunting in a Union camp area in the warm afternoon sunshine.

I found this Union Infantry button very deep under a clump of tall grass. Here it is fresh from the hole. This was my second script button and I never thought I could find even one when I was packing for our trip. Greg and Vernon make great guides!

I went into the brush and trees beside a little creek thinking that nobody else would brave the briars and stickers to hunt there. I could imagine a soldier bending over to fill his canteen and loosing something along that stream so I wanted to give it a try. It was kinda hard to swing the coil in most places, but I got a good signal under a big tree root.

It was one of the hardest to dig bullets I was to get on our trip. I had to saw my way down through a tangle of big roots until I at last found this bullet at 10 inches of roots deep. Good thing I had my trusty Lennox root saw. The bullet came out of the ground very brown from all the tannin in the soil and stayed that way even when cleaned. I think it gives it character. I took this photo along side a root of similar size.
As with every hunt we went on, we all walked away from this hunt with good finds. The day ended much too soon and we found ourselves heading back to the Plantation for some dinner and a good nights sleep. A very nice Sunday in Virginia indeed!
