Day 2 with the CTX

My brother Tim stopped by after his "seated" hunt and we swung by a local fave spot. We're still getting used to the CTX 3030 and it is finding stuff that we've missed in the past. Most of the finds came from a fairly small area and were deep. Ended up with 18 wheats, 2 George cents, 3 Rosies ('48, '50 and '59) and a '43P war nickel. Skeeters were hungry too.

I'm running combined (ferrous-coin) - open screen
Fast on
Deep off
Response normal
Sensitivity: Auto +3 (switched to Manual 30 later)

Good job doc.

What kind of depth are you talking and how did the targets hit at that depth compared to the E-Trac?

Play with any of the new settings?

Thx,
Albert

Albert - I ran almost completely in "combined" mode which is all new. I didn't turn on the GPS, I'll play around with that when I feel real comfortable with the detecting features. The coins we were finding were anywhere from 7 - 10". I have my tone profile set up to give me a high tone on any target with a CO number higher than 30 (with the exception of CO 49 and 50 which I have grunting low to handle falses). I run my volume gain set to 15 and threshold gain also at 15. I like the volume gain low so that deep targets really "whisper" at you. At this depth, the tones were anywhere from smooth to iffy and in some cases barely there - but there! The numbers were usually off on the silver (CO 40 - 42), but this is expected at this depth and with so much iron around. I was digging them anyway, so it was a pleasant surprise when I the signals changed to 44/45/46 out of the hole.

Here's the vid:

Thanks for the reply Doc. I am hearing the same thing from a friend who is pulling quite a few silver coins from a spot he has hammered with the E-Trac. Clearly the unmasking is better.

I meant did you try the ferrous coin setting at all, or were you just on the trash density high setting? target trace? I will run combined audio when I get mine, hopefully in the next few weeks.

Thanks for the great description and nice video.

Albert

Albert, no problem - I'm running a ferrous-coin mode with target trace. As a side note, I don't really look too much at the screen unless I have a really iffy target - even with the E-Trac I was a "numbers guy" and didn't use smart find that much. I can say that the target trace on deep, iffy signals seems to be very faint ie: the intensity of it varies based upon the overall strength of the signal. In just about every case, the coins that we found were in close association with iron - which explains why they were missed with the other detectors. Areas where iron was not in abundance were pretty well clean of good targets - so the E-Tracs cleaned up on them pretty effectively.

Nice going Doc. Thanks for sharing your settings and making the vid. You guys are doing great with this new detector--definitely sounds like it has a clear unmasking advantage over the Trac. Keep it up, and thanks for posting. ---Cladiator
