Day 2 w the SE and Bryce's 101 course

Unfortunately, I only got out for 2 hours today, however, I made some good progress I think. This gives me a total of ~ 5 hourse on the machine.

3 things helped my day tremendously.

#1 is the pinpointing. The instructions I got here worked perfectly.
# 2 was my shovel. Those little lesch diggers don't work for me. I use a smaller spade type shovel that comes about knee hi. This takes much less effort to efficiently dig a plug.
#3 Bryce's advice to dig only signals that repeated in all directions. This resulted in digging very little junk. If I had to guess, I would say I dug ~ 10% garbage with this technique. Although I didn't receive many deep signals that would repeat in all directions, they were almost all coins. I did cheat a bit and dig a few that were inconsistant and I paid the price, so I pretty much stuck to the program.

When i got into the trashy area, I was none too happy. Too many trash signals to deal with.

I am feeling comfortable that I can consistantly dig clad at this point. WOuld you say that a deep silver or large copper would repeat in all directions? True or false?

Bryce, I am ready for my next assignment or am I getting ahead of myself? Although a newbie with this machine, I do have 2 years with a much lesser machine.

I must say I am extremely happy with my success today. What a different experience from yesterday. And, even though, I only dug 1 wheatie, I didnt expect to find much today. I know the great coins are in this park based on what a few friends have found. I really didn't feel like covering ground that the XS had just been over.

Thanks so much Bryce as I truly appreciate the guidance and am looking forward to the next step. Please advise.

BEst,

Aaron

Honestly....not always.....and in my neck of the woods not very often. However it is important that you take small steps like you are...and it will be more rewarding later on.
If you cut your trash digs down as much as you said...got some clad..and got a wheatie.....I'd say you are heading in the right direction.

QUOTE: "I did cheat a bit and dig a few that were inconsistant and I paid the price, so I pretty much stuck to the program".

To be honest....that would be what I recommend as a "next assignment" :) Take another chance or 2 on signals that repeat 3 ways instead of 4...each new hunt. After many more hours you can then start trying some of the hits that only repeat 2 or 3 times.
The important thing is that you are learning...and not taking any shortcuts which can hinder what you "hear" and interperet later on.

QUOTE: "When i got into the trashy area, I was none too happy. Too many trash signals to deal with".

I strongly recommend a small coil. Doesn't matter which one...x-8...minelab 7.5...6" Excelerator....6 x 8 SEF...Joey 5 x 7...etc
They can really help you learn in trashy areas because they separate so much better. Keeps the sounds from getting jumbled together.

Since this is "day 2"...I would keep it like exactly as you are doing since you feel happy about the hunt.
Only you can know when it's time to try a "little more"..and when that time comes...there's a lot of successful hunters on the forum with the finds to back up what settings changes they suggest.
No one person's settings will work for everyone and the soil condition plays a role in some settings suggestions as well....but there are a ton of successful hunters here as there finds will show.

I would just keep pluggin' along right now...and continue to take small steps.
When you have quite a few more hours on the machine...please feel free to pm me...or just post on the open forum that you'd like people to offer their settings to you so you can try them.
The main thing then will be for you to not try 50 different things...but we can all help you cross that bridge when we come to it:detecting:

anyway...thanks for the kind words...you're more than welcome...and good luck on your next hunt.

but I was thinking I'd loose depth. My theory is that the oldest coins are the deepest. I have heard 2 different stories with the sunray: 1.) they do not give up any depth over the slimline and 2:) they do give up depth.

What is the concensus? Why would one want to play in the trash if the good stuff is at an unattainable depth with a smaller coil?

On my 8" coil, unfortunately, somehow the ring that screws to the machine is now disconnected from the coil cable. Is there anyway to get it back on?

Thanks again. FOr the time being I will continue on the path and take a few risks over time.

Best,

Aaron

I have found a lot of silver and injuns' as deep as 9" with my 6" Excelerator coil.

In many cases...if the trash is pretty dense...you'll actually gain depth...because the small coil will separate the signals and see around the trash...therefor penetrating through it...whereas the larger coil will not "see" what's under all the trash.

In a clean area...sure...your stock coil might hit a coin an inch or 2 deeper...but in a trash infested area...that same larger coil might not even see an 7" to 8" deep coin hiding in there.

As for your coil connector problem...sorry...but i am unsure about that one.

My last outting i hit a mercury dime at around 8-9 inches but the signal was super choppy.. The only reason i dug it was when the one good hit that i would get after sweeping the coil over the spot several times showed in the coin range. so dont forget to check that as well.. I was also using bryces settings.. and i was using the 11 DD Pro Coil.. .. And not sure if it matters but was hunting an old church. not a park.

but I was thinking I'd loose depth. My theory is that the oldest coins are the deepest.

Here is a perfect example for you. I went to an older park the other day. Started with the bigger coil but could not get any good signals by the picnic area and I could tell there was a ton of trash there. I changed over to the smaller coil and almost immediately dug a wheat penny at only 2-3 inches. Could have easily been a silver dime. The penny signal was being masked by the trash. The smaller coil let me get in between the trash.....

Bryce is usually right on with his his advice to beginners greascarguy. As a matter of fact he's usually right on with his advise to experienced hunters too.
I think if you keep taking your time with things; you will be a much more successful hunter later on. The best learning experience with the explorer is to take no shortcuts yet to make sure you don't get frustrated.
Shortcuts taken now will be a quick remedy but will not help you down the road in my opinion. you are headed in the right direction.
