Nancy did not hunt with us on the first day of our adventure, she was too tired out from the all night flights and no sleep. She also wanted to catch up with Sharon and the girls at Vernons house. This day she was ready to give the Civil War relics a try. Also on this hunt was Leanne for her first ever relic hunt as well. Vernon wanted to hunt a field that was a Union camp sight on the way to Appomatox but was afraid it might have cows in it. I have been around cows my whole life so I told him we would go there and if there were cows I would take care of it and we could hunt. When we arrived at the field, sho 'nuff, cows were everywhere. I opened the gate and Vernon drove the van in to the field. The cows came running towards the van.Vernon turned around and drove out the gate. He said he did not want those cows licking the van. After he parked outside of the gate I walked over to the cows and had a little talk with them. They were nice cows, just a little curious and thought that when a vehicle drove into the field they were going to get a load of hay to eat. I walked back to the van and told Vernon and the girls that the cows had given permission and we could hunt. They just shook their heads and Vernon made some remark about "Cow whisperer".

Here are the troops getting ready to detect in the face of dangerous moo cows. Outstanding bravery on the part of our couragous team. The cows are also out standing in their field,
We walked on past the bovine centrys and began to hunt for more relics of the past. Vernon and Leanne went to the right flank, and Nancy and I headed left.

Nancy was hunting over from me a way because I had a bunch of four legged detecting groupies following me around and she does not trust cows. I was working a place by a pond when she walked over and said, "I found this big honkin' bullet, is it anything?"

I looked into her outstreached hand and said."Yes honey, you just found a genuine Civil War minnie ball" She handed it to me and walked off to hunt some more. Like it happened every day or something. I had not found a minnie ball yet on our trip although I did have two possibly better bullets. A minnie ball was on my list and she found one and was dissapointed it wasn't an old coin. Women. She had not been gone for more than a few minutes when I got a signal just like the day before when bullets were under the coil.

I dug up my treasure! Yeehaww, my very own minnie ball. I showed it off to my new pets and snapped a photo. They were not impressed. Cows. I crossed a lttle stream to get away from my fan club and started to hunt again. I got a good signal right off and dug a plug, nuthin. I checked the hole and the target was still in there. I dug down another couple inches and still nothing I could pick up with the Vibraprobe. I dug down some more and carefully removed the dirt with my hands to keep from damaging a good find.

Down in the hole was this wierd circle thing. Do you know what it is. You are correct, a minnie ball nose down in the ground with the hollow base sticking up. I measured it with a tapemeasure I keep in my pouch and it was 12 inches down from the dirt line, With grass and all it was around 14 inches deep.
We all found good stuff here, and Vernon has posted some of them, but I wanted to take you out there with us and I am running out of my limit of picts on this post. Nancy found the gold ring and Civil War tent pole part this day, and Leanne proved that your first day can be great too. Vernon did himself proud and I found more bullets and even a Civil War percussion cap along with other cool stuff.

Even Vernon warmed up to the cows later that day. I caught him trying to pet this one. Remember Vernon, cows can be your friends, if you stand our ground and let them know who is boss. They are. after all, lower on the food chain. Fine day of detecting and more finds to take home and just the second day! More Later. DC
