As I have caught he-- and gave it back, I would like to ask you four a question. As I said before I had nothing but bad luck with my xs as have two friends. Now the question, I run into anouther local detectorist with an explorer xs for sale and ended up buying it. I still have the dfx I purchased 2 weeks ago and the reason I purchased the used explorer is that it works as claimed, both for depth and discrimination. I tested it against my 2 friends and it will get 4 inches more depth. Now my question is why does this detector work right when the three of us could not get ours to work the same with identical settings? We all purchased our explorer xs units within 2 weeks of each other from kellyco. None of the three units would detect a dime over six inches deep yet this used unit I just bought will pick up a dime at 9 inches deep and air test at 10 inches. I know you guys got mad at me as I did you but this is an honest story. Was there a problem with some of the units made 27 months ago or what? Jeff sold his unit to me because he is buying a new explorer 2 unit. Don and brent my two friends cannot believe the difference between this used detector and theirs in the depth it can reach. The unit I sold and don and brents units were all sent in to be checked and came back ok, but still would not go any deeper. I would appreciate any info on this as untill I saw my new ex work I could not believe the explorer was a good unit. I am pleased enough with the used unit I ordered a x-1 probe for it as well as a wot coil. Did we just get a bad batch of unitsor what. Ddon and brent are considering selling their xs and trying to find a couple of used explorers if they show as much difference as mine.If I have pis-ed people off I apologised but there was an honest problem and I was totally disgusted as you can guess after spending a thousand dollars and not getting the performance expected. I would appreciate any insite as to what the problem with these three units might have been. Thanks, lilfox.

Guv; I did send it to minelab also don and brent sent theirs but we could not notice any change on return. There was no problems found but the used unit that I just purchased will air test 8 plus on a dime infact today I found a 39 dime at 8.5 an a 39 quarter at almost 11 inches. It air test good also our old units wouldn't air test at over six same in ground. I think they are like cars, Some units made on monday bad, rest of week good. All I know is the used unit I bought holds up the explorer reputation for going deep. Why my old one wouldn"t I don't know. I also had e-mails from five different guys who had the same problem and they had tried all the hints and kinks on the forum. If you or anyone knows why some of the units do this I would love to know, It may not be widespread but there does seem to be a problem with some units. Thanks Lilfox.

several contributing factors. First, neither the Explorer nor Sovereign "air test" very well due to multifrequency. This has always been the case. To compare them with any single freq VLF is comparing Apples to Oranges. That said, I find the more mineralized the soil, the better the two Minelab's operate. This is soil, not interference. Some confuse electrical interference with bad ground. Another thing, it takes a little while to understand an Explorer, and the longer you use one the more familiar the sounds get. Sounds are the key to digging DEEP targets, not the Smartfind screen. Learn what settings are best for your scenario, and then learn the sounds. You have to hear enough deep targets you "learn" them. I rarely have customers dig anything over 6-8 inches right off (some do, most do not). It appears to take about 6 months before I start to hear about 10+ inch targets (coin size). One reason I promote buying from a dealer that will help you, is just your situation. Everyone needs some help now and then. I have been a Minelab dealer for 11 years, and my goal still remains to help my customers as much as possible. That means a lot to us. Minelab's have been very good with tolerances. I rarely see one that is better or worse than another. We never had the cracking problems, etc. Can't speak for other dealers, but we've only had one Explorer that was defective. Minelab replaced with a new one...no questions, no hassle. Hang in there, it takes patience but it will be worth it. Good hunting, David @ Dixie

David; This second explorer works fantastically good. I have only been out once with it but found 39 quarter at 10 to 11 inches and a 35 dime and two wheaties over 8 inches down. I just wish the first had done as good. Oh well maybe just 1 strange unit, I almost feel bad for the guy who bought it, but I told him the problems I had. He said he would work through it and maybe send it back to minelab again. I appreciate the offer of help, and if I do run into problems I will let you know. I am looking forward to the X-1 probe. As soon as I have the opportunity I will post pics. Thanks again, Lilfox
