Hi dave it was nice meeting you, here are some of the finds from sat. hunt we have a few whatsits hope you can help ID some of the stuff,on loos like an elephant tusk or rhino horn? is it a civil war artifact? also a small comb, is this civil war related? Its was great meeting everyone, I sure had a great time my daughter also had fun, Debbie, James, Gary and I stayed until dark and detected james and I hit a nice hotspot and he found a cool lead Mule!, and a nice 3 ringer also. I'm very happy with my finds I had a few firsts nice scabard tip, and my first .69 3 ringer... but it was all the cool and nice people I met Steve and Terry were awsome!! hope we can all get together again soon. jd

That spring rendevous is a lot of fun. Looks like you have a very primative snaffle and the "comb" is probably part of a curry comb and is real. You really floored me when you found that 3 cent piece. The little piece next to the rhino horn is called a hem weight. Normally has a single wire through the middle of it. Real common for campsites but a can't imagine women in camps loosing as many as have been found. Maybe it's something to do with tents. Scabbard tip is very nice probably a 2 holer. I don't know about the rhino horn but I'm sure it's from the cantonment so don't throw it away. Mule is nice also and a boredom indicator for the camp. Good meeting with you and steve and all the guys and gals.

I believe hem weights were also sewn into mens jackets. So when they got wet they wouldn't curl at the bottoms. If this is true, that would explain why so many are found........Aaron

i play in a band now and then and we were playing saturday night so i didn't make it again this year.next year for sure.looks like you made some good finds J.D.,i did a little relic hunting friday after work at an old homesite.came up with a fancy suspender buckle and a nice iron stirrup.i suspect it's military but lack the knowledge to say for sure.maybe i should post a picture for you more experienced hunters to id.i know there has to be coins there but so far i've only found a 46 merc dime.keep me in mind for next year guys.

Thank you, Aaron. I have found and seen a lot of them found but never knew how they fit into the story. I had always believed that visiting local women dropped them and then it became obvious that something else was going on. Thanks for your insight.
Dave

I personally have never seen them in any Military coat or jacket. Most frock coats were issued with a raw hem; in order to be trimmed in the field to length. A custom fitted coat would be the exception on hem. I reenact and I wouldn't want even a light lead weight smackin' me in the gizzard every time I had to run somewhere. I have seen them in period curtains. My understanding is they were used to keep the large, antebellum curtains free of wrinkles and nice looking. I have only dug them around period home sites. Hi there! I've been lurking for a while and finally decided to join. I've been detecting for just over a year now. I have also found a "Rhino horn looking thing". The one I found is brass and have been told by other relic hunters in my club that it is a two piece oxen nose ring. If I have been misinformed please let me know.
