I had "eyed" an older road in a town not far from where I live that I knew to have had some CW activity. In all the research I've done thus far, I had not found any mention of campsite locations.
While driving down this road after my midnight shift last Sat. I noticed a Moving Sale sign. I couldn't resist, I browsed a bit, the garnered enough courage to ask if anybody has ever asked to detect this property, several acres with a 20 or so year old house on a hill fronted by a treed front yard that sloped down toward an old dried up creekbed. I was told that it had been detected by the foremost relic hunter in this area (Memphis/Germantown/Collierville) and they had pulled up a lot of items, including "fish scales" and numerous other item, and it had been thought that a cannon was buried somewhere nearby.
To make a long story longer, I asked if the owner would mind if I poked around a bit. She said she had already sold the property but it would be Okay. I found an indention in the yard that ran perpendicular to the yard (north-south) about 40 feet. I hunted carefully for about 40 minutes along the edges of what I believe was a latrine (sink, Mr. Poche). I found several items, haversack hook, button back, several bullets including what I believe to be a dropped sharps and an awesome carved chess piece bullet, v-section out of the top. Unfortunately, someone came up and asked if I had found anything, I said I had found several things and showed them to her. She then apologized, said she was the "new owner" and I would have to stop. I thanked her for allowing me to hunt, and offered her some of my finds. She asked for the haversack hook, and one of the bullets. (Luckily she didn't ask for the carved or the sharps). Anyway, to the question...based on Mr. Poche's book the actual camp area with tents and all is usually several hundred feet from the "Sink", if the trench ran north-south, could I expect to look to the west of this trench (the east has the house and a drop-off)? The fence line is just about 20 feet from the trench and I might be able to secure permission from the adjoining neighbor. Sure wish I could have hunted the flat near the dry creek.
Thanks for reading, would appreciate any of your professional opinions.

Luv2Croon:
I just love it when someone reads your book and uses it to find campsites. The real purpose of the book is to help others find camps. I think you are doing everything right: Old road...Creek...campsite. I'm trying to draw a little map based upon your post. Yes, if you are sure depression is a latrine you should go west to find the camp. If the road crosses the stream you might also have a rifle pit placed on hill above the creek and it would be a defensive position expecting the enemy to come from the east. The camp in either case is to the west (if my map is correct). Let me know your email address (send a note to the webmaster of the forum to wipe it from the forum) and I will give you as much help as I can. Do you have a GPS to mark your relic locations? If not try to locate them on a hand drawn map as it will help. Here is the question of the day...Sharps equal cavalry and knapsack hook equal infantry. Mounted infantry or double occupancy of the site? Carved bullets are boredom indicators so there may have been a long occupancy to the camp.
Hape this helps.
