COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina head football coach Steve Spurrier has donated $25,000 of his own personal money to the school's athletics department for track & field facilities, associate athletics director Jeff Barber said Friday.
Spurrier said facilities for the school's women's and spring sports could use some upgrading.
"I realize that I've been extremely fortunate to receive the money that head football coaches make these days," Spurrier said. "I also feel it is a privilege and a responsibility to give back to our university. ... Hopefully this donation will be helpful to their success."
South Carolina head track and field coach Curtis Frye said he hopes Spurrier's contribution will lead other Gamecock supporters to step forward.
"We are in dire need of capital improvements at USC," Frye said.
Spurrier, who makes $1.25 million a year, has finished his first season with South Carolina, guiding the Gamecocks to a 7-4 record.
