Arriving at Ogunquit Beach, ME I expected to do a Tango with Ophelia, but it turned out to be more like a slow Waltz. The storm just flat out didn't happen. It was cloudy both Sat & Sun, but no rain while we were there, not a drop, just heavy overcast.
Beach was in a peculiar mode as the first group of pix will tell. There was a trough running N/S that became apparent as the tide went out. In that trough is where all the old coins and boolits were dug. The CZ20 with 8" coil was at it's maximum depth limit on most of these old finds. Signals were very weak low tone(iron) and they were all two spade shovel blades deep or more. Most of the time the holes had to be widened to get down to the targets.
I have to admit that although I was hoping for some gold, finding that Vnick, that deep, at the ocean, made my weekend.
Fisher Excel ID:
One of my purposes in going was to try out the Fisher Excel ID at a saltwater beach since I have seen so little written on it. Ogunquit Beach has very moderate mineralisation as far as beaches in Maine go. Also, when the tide comes in it covers the whole beach, so every tide cycle the saltwater soaks the sand.
The Excel would not manually GB on the damp sand, 4 beeps every time. So I set her to FP the factory preset and used her for about 1.5 hours, after the tide drove me out of the trough. I ran the coil over some water in tidal pools but it did not act well, AM shows a continuously varying target. But I hadn't planned on hunting the water or water's edge anyway, that's why I own the CZ20.
On the damp sand, which also contains some bands of light black sand, she ran quiet. Also the target ID and depth readout on PP were correct. She continued to handle iron of all sizes with the same ease as over land. I did not see a big depth penalty, a CZ she ain't, but I don't expect her to be. The silver earring ID'ed as a zinc, so much for ignoring zinc ID's.
Boolits:
Now where I need some help is on the boolits, and old large caliber rim fire cartridge. I know modern rounds, but these look like old boolits to me. The top view of the cartridge shows the dual sided firing pin strike. The short slug, looks like it might fit the cartridge.
