DAMM YANKEE needs JOHNNY REB Advice:

Hey you JOHNNY REBS, this DAMM YANKEE needs some GOOD SOUTHERN ADVICE!! I'm planning a vacation this winter down Your Way, and WOULD APPRECIATE some advice on some GOOD BEACH RESORTS to spend a month or two in both South Carolina and Georgia. I'm looking for resorts where I can metal detect the beaches, and maybe hook-up with some SOUTHERN GENTLEMEN or LADIES for some land detecting. I'm interested in some resorts, that a DISABLED VET can AFFORD, and be around NICE COMMON FOLK like myself. Any HELP would be DEEPLY APPRECIATED!! Les Robinson

I would avoid the Charleston area. The beaches, especially Folly Beach, seem to be undergoing continuous renourishment so good stuff get covered up and tons of junk get dredged in. There is an occassional decent find but nothing I would travel here for. Also, metal detecting on City of Charleston property is against the law. So that leaves private property and not many people around here give permission anymore, at least it was getting much harder back when I was relic hunting. Although I don't know for sure I would think that down around the SC/GA/FL coast would be pretty good. I have family with property in St Augustine so I think I might take a trip down there. He wants to learn metal detecting so it would be fun anyway. I wish I could be of more help since I live in the Charleston area but things around here just aren't what they used to be. Best of luck.

Hi Jerry, MANY THANKS for the response!! I remember reading an article in Western & Eastern Treasure a yr. or so ago, about a guy who was detecting one of Charleston's City Parks, and that he occassionally would come up with a GOOD FIND, despite that the park is HEAVILY HUNTED!!! I think that city park was on Charleston Harbor. Was he doing some ILLEGAL DETECTING, or did they do a recent law change pertaining to metal detecting? I've had a couple of friends that have passed through the area, and they metal detected Myrtle Beach, and they stated that the PICKIN'S were VERY SLIM!! Les Robinson

Hey Tom, Is it LEGAL to metal detect HILTON HEAD, because someone told me that it was ILLEGAL to detect anywhere on the Island? When you say stay away from MYRTLE BCH, becasue there are ONLY MUMBLES!! Do you mean that the PICKINGS are VERY SLIM? MANY THANKS for the response.

at least 1984. I left in '82 for a two year overhaul in Newport News, VA and it was legal when I left. When I got back I went hunting in a park right outside of the Citadel, a place where I had looked for old coins before. A Charleston police officer came up to me and informed me that it was illegal to metal detect on city property. He was very nice and polite about it. He never once tried to intimidate me and he didn't cause trouble for me. But he informed me that an ordinance had been passed that prohibited metal detecting on city property. So yes, whoever told the magazine they were hunting in city parks here is breaking the law and I would imagine that by now the police might not be so polite. If he continues to do it I hope he doesn't get caught. I don't know why the law was passed, only that it was and I have obeyed it ever since. I would personally like to meet you and do some detecting with you and others on this forum. But when I said that hunting around here is not good, I seriously meant it. My serious detecting days are over. I love walking the beaches and sure, I find the occasional ring or something but nothing like what others on here post. Back in my serious days I relic hunted. I had permission to hunt some pretty nice plantation areas and found lots of nice things. I also hunted confederate campsites and found lots of good stuff. Those days are over, long gone. I wish you the best and would love to meet you. I am only telling you the truth about this area. Best of luck to you and thanks for your service in Nam.

Jerry, MANY THANKS for taking the time to THOROUGHLY EXPLAIN that situation. I may have to rethink my southern destinations, but I definitely want to stay a couple of days in South Carolina, and DO SOME SIGHT-SEEING around CHARLESTON, and some ot the REVOLUTIONARY WAR BATTLEFIELDS. The Delaware Regiment of the Continental Army DISTINGUISHED THEMSELVES
in those campaigns (COWPENS & GUILFORD COURTHOUSE, if I got the location names right, because I'm reciting from memory)!! Plus, I'd like to visit the state's beaches to see what they are like!!
Have a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS - Jerry!!

You could spend an untold amount of time seeing all of the sites here. It is indeed a very historical old city that you can enjoy just walking around on your own or a number of organized tours that you can take, including horse carriage rides throughout the city with the carriage driver giving the history of various locations. Dining is also very good but that one is subjective. Some people like certain places while others don't. But there is something for everybody. When I first came here back in the '70s my favorite way to take in the city was just to get out and walk. I think you really get to see more and spend as much time as you like. Plus it's cheaper. Here is a link that will give you some info. http://www.charleston.worldweb.com/
If you do a google on Charleston Tourism you will find plenty. Best of luck and send me a pm when you decide to come down. If I can assist you in any way please let me know. I would be happy to do some detecting on the beach, even Folly, so long as you don't have expectations that are too high. But, who knows, it may be the one time that makes a liar out of me, lol. But some prior planning for that would be needed to check on the tides and weather. Happy Holidays to you and yours.
