Damage while detecting

Digger 45

Active member
Just can't believe some people, went hunting today at a large park about 100 acres, got out of sight from my car and returned an hour or so later to find that some one had broken my rear door window and stole my bag that i have my detecting tools in it. Thankfully i had all my tools on my belt and just some batteries and a pair of pliers were in the bag. By just breaking the window the alarm didn't go off.

Sure didn't make any money today detecting.

And the best part is..It will be from someone who they associate with. Thieves have no honor.

I had to give up one of my detecting sites(a wooded city park) because of this same reason...thieves:veryangry: These days you can't leave anything in sight locked up in your vehicle and even then it's no guarantee against break-in's. I tried to park in different areas at this site but just could not concentrate on detecting once my vehicle was out of my sight.

Well that sucks...hopefully insurance will cover the repair....if that is all this idiot got then the joke is on him....with a little luck jerk this will overdose and no lnoger be a burden to society. ..

Sad to hear this. Hopefully, the A-hole(s) will be caught sooner or later.

I occassionally hunt parks in bad neighborhoods and this has always been on my mind.
In those areas, i always make sure i'm within eye ball distance of my Jeep but even that is no guarantee against trouble.
Sometimes its not worth hunting those areas.

Bummer! I bought a really cheap 15yr old wreck of a nondescript rig with Jesus bumper stickers on purpose just to try to look poor so I dont lose any of my gear to something like this...
Theres a lot of desperate drug addled creeps out there we have to try to dodge.:sadwalk:.
Mud.

So sorry to hear digger45. Karma is going to come back around and bite the person(s) in the azz.

There is a park in an Older section of a local city that I have been to a couple of times. Both times a Gentleman came out and inquired as to what I was doing. Told him that I was metal detecting looking for lost items.

He thanked me and said I am just trying to keep an eye on the neighborhood. I thanked him for his vigilance. Figured that I was relatively safe as long as he was watching the neighborhood.

Unfortunately one no longer has to be in a "Bad" neighborhood to have some lowlife scum bag cause damage.

Ya it sucks but could have been worse, so many low life out there and there up early now looking for cans before the next low life gets there. Along the way they steal and break in when ever they see something they can take. Yes a near empty bag was all they got, much more inside but hidden so a lesson learned. I will be watching more of my surroundings and doing things different.

And your wrong he doesn't VOTE thats the problem

You are right there Digger...I was out early this am...cold...yet there were scroungers shuffling about all over the place hunting cans or targets of opportunity.....I did not stop at a few of my places on account of them..
Most of the can hunters in just a few years past were no problem, a guy can tell..
Mud.

Digger,I always keep my car in sight while metal detecting, even in better neighborhoods. There are just too many people trying to rip someone off.Be thankful someone didn't take your car.One thing all the metal detector hunters have in common here most of us carry including myself.Good Luck Ron

Carrying doesn't make any difference. You can't shoot someone for breaking into your car no matter what state you live in. It's nice to be able to protect yourself but that doesn't do anything to keep your car safe when its out of sight. Sucks we have to detect so close to our cars quite often. Glock 27

Its not nice when anything like this happens, probably someone looking for something sell for the 'fix',these days i only keep a minimal amount of detecting gear in the truck while i am out detecting,up untill last year i use to always carry about 4 detectors with me but after reading about folks loosing equipment i only carry just one main detector and a old backup one just incase.

Although the insurance would pay up for most of the big ticket items, its all my small personal items that i would also miss as well.

Scum of the earth that what they are.

I do not believe that your automobile insurance will cover the items that are stolen out of a vehicle. In my state they do have to cover (By Law) any glass breakage but nothing other than Original equipment in the auto.

I do not leave anything in my vehicles for that reason.

In addition, even if the insurance does cover, there's age-related deductables and in my case usually long lost or no receipts.
The less i contact my insurance co. for any reason especially for some kind of minor claim, the better.

I also hide my radar detector, handheld CB radio and other valuables evertime i park anywhere. Out of sight, out of mind and only takes a minute.
One nice thing about my Jeeps, they have dark smoked glass windows in the cargo area which is near impossible to see through.
