D2 vs. 6x10

I had a D2 go bad on me per say. I found that I could no longer run an RX gain of 9 or higher and have Disc. up over 80. Hold the coil in the air and turn on Boost without overloading. Called Whites and they once again come through as the super Company they are. They sent me a replacement D2 along with the 6x10.
Now from what I am hearing on these forums is the 6x10 is the coil of choice.
I have just begun to compare these Two coils and am sure allot of infield use will give the true results but below is the initial findings so far.
D2 coil easily goes 2 inches deeper. RX @ 8 Disc. on 75. The 6x10 run at RX 14 and Disc on 85.
6x10 a little better for a nail quarter test with the nail 1 inch away.
I made a test bed 2 years ago and overall the D2 seems better so far.
This weekend I am able to go down the the Site where the meteor had broken apart in Wisconsin and hunt on one farm that has produced a few meteorites.
I have a test meteorite which is 2 grams. The 6x10 only picks it up if it almost touches it. The D2 does at over 2" away. and that is running the 6x10 allot hotter ?
Last thing is the new D2 passes the Cranked up settings in the air test unlike my old one. But the old one still find the quarter @ 10". But the new one seems to run smoother. So how bad is the 1st coil? and how do they go bad? The coil was never abused and had initially passed the cranked air test but slowly started failing.

On one forum you will. It may well work great for some people and conditions. Now to make some people mad. If you will notice 2 guys answer every post and give their opinion. Look close, they don't own or use a V3. Now, I have and use a 6x10 but as you observed not if I want to get the most depth. It gets the depth closer to a 6" coil. This is normal. Elliptical coils get depth closer to their smaller width. I actually use the 6x10 and D2 95% of the time.

As I said above about depth. The 6x10 is a narrower coil so it will discriminate better side to side on your nail test.

Now the following is MHO. It seems to have affected the D2 more often. What I heard is the shield would come lose. My last 2 D2 coils have been holding up super. How bad was your coil, that got 10" coins? Rob

Ive found the same thing with the D2.Its an absolutely awesome coil when its up to par. When they start to degrade, its not so much that they are completely unusable, its that they become unusable when the sensitivities are cranked up to the point where they could be run when they are in good condition.Ive been through two of these coils also and believe along with an expoxy issue, the case of the D2 isnt quite as strong as it needs to be.With the first D2,I had the detector in my car on some pretty warm days and heard that the heat could cause problems. On the second coil,I made sure not to leave the machine where it would get warm. The second coil still started to degrade like the first and I have to believe its from use. When I detect,I like to scrub the grass (putting slight downward pressure on the coil) and this is where Ive come to believe the case might be part of the problem.JMO
I also have to believe that anyone that thinks the 6X10 will come close to the D2 depthwise, hasnt run the D2 nearly enough. It will pick out good targets in trash better than most believe.

I have and run the V3. Both coils are great coils for their applications. I have never had problems with either coil. My soil in northern IL is not to mineralized. I like the D2 for depth over the 6x10. But if its got trash to it i run the 6x10. I do notice a significant depth difference 1.5 - 2.5 inches. I also run the 4x6 and notice that is better at the trash separation but depth is maybe 5 - 6 inches max. If it is clean nothing bets the 950 coil or super12 for depth but it has to clean. All these coils are great for their applications.

What kind of soil readings are you getting in Southern Illinois? I'd like to know the VDI and probe readings of the soil. I'd like to compare since you are having such good luck with the concentric coils. Rob
