D2, Cover coil.

I almost hurt myself getting mine off. You have to put the edge of it on something with the coil upside down and whack the bottom of the coil with your hand. I used the handle on an old filing cabinet to catch the edge of the cover. There may be some other ways I don't know. I do know I would not consider putting it back on the coil... too hard to get off.

I had the same problem as you and did not feel comfortable about whacking the bottom of the coil and damaging it.

Here is the link to what I ended up doing.

Be carefull when using the screwdrivers, as you only want to get them between the cover and the coil.

Hope this is helpful

Whacking is not a good thing, if the shield comes loose forget it. I once put a small chip in the coil getting a cover off with a knife. I get all mine off with my hands and I have all the Whites coils. I just hook my nails of my fingers on the edge and work my way around. Rob

I don't use the covers, but I have heard that running the coil under hot tap water will soften the cover and expand it enough that it slips right off.

I have been taking some real rough sandpaper and sanding off most of the rim that snaps on the coil, I would leave the rim on the very top and bottom. The sides are harder to get loose because of the edge being so thin that there's not much area to pry with your fingers, but the top and bottom have the solid bar across the whole length of the coil. I just removed the one on my old coil to put on a new one and it took me a little time but it finally came off. Just work your way around the coil tugging on it until you get some movement and then just turn and repeat the process.

I imagine running it under some warm tap water may do the trick as well but be careful if it is too hot.

From what I understand the balance wire inside may be held down with hot melt glue.

If the wire moves due to softening of the glue the coil will probably go out of balance and have to be sent back.

These detectors with high transmit power and high frequency are very touchy.

DO NOT PRY ON THE COIL WITH METAL OR SHARP OBJECTS WHATEVER YOU DO!

Hope this helps

After many experiments, I found a relative simple way to remove the cover on my D2. But, before I get anybodies hopes up, I'm going to try to repeat it and take some photos. It doesn't involve heat, hammering, beating, etc. and it will not scratch the coil. It should work on other coils and covers as well. I'll post again soon. Keep your fingers crossed that it works.

Well it works great!
