D2 coil

Member
I'm new to the v3i and only have adout 6 hours under my belt so far. I am not sure if I like the D2 coil. Its sure alot different than other double D coils I've used in the past. The detection field seem soft and spongy and with a hot spot in the center in discrimination mode while detecting. Is it just me or do others feel this way. I have been running in the CJ program mostly.

Mine seems no different to me than my other D2 coils. Right now my D2 is my favorite coil. Have you tried any other coils?

If my 10x12 had a better null I would use it more in open areas for more coverage. Now I will put it on when relic hunting and I run it in single frequency 7.5.

Rob,
Unfortunately I don't have any other coils to try. Could you elaborate more on the nullng problem with your SEF.

I use the SEF 12x10" and have no problem in 3 frequency, other than the fact that the VDI on nickels is 25 instead of 19. I use it 100% of the time. I kind of know what you are talking about with the D2. You need to be in Mixed Mode for it to be effective.

Are you talking mixed mode audio. I gave it a try and I did not like it. Is this how you use your 10x12 SEF coil?

For the same gain setting with the D2 I show a signal percent of 7 to 9%, and with MY SEF I show 36%. I can run the D2 up to 15 and don't get that high. So since I can't run the RX as high with the SEF as I can with the D2, I don't gain anything but weight.

Now if I run in 2.5 or 7.5 single frequency there is no problem. My SEF doesn't handle the 22.5. Try running the SEF on single frequency 22.5. Now not all SEF are the same. So some people may get a better one than mine. The problem is there is no guarantee which you will get.

I run a 10x12 SEF on another brand and it works fine.

For me Mixed Mode Audio is a MUST! I strongly believe that targets are easily missed by using Discriminate only. Sometimes just a slight change in the threshold is enough to make me stop and investigate a target further. Once the target is centered over the target, it often will give a nice clear tone, If you are not centered over a deep target in discriminate you may never know it was there.

I do not care for Stereo Mixed Mode, (All Metal in one ear and Discriminate in the other).

Neil, what RX, AM, and disc can you run?

Rob, I usually run with my RX around 12, AM at 74 and Disc in 92. Depending on conditions I can sometimes go a bit higher and often have to lower it down. The signal is usually around 29% with very little noise.

Yep that's what I thought, yours is better than mine. That's the problem with the SEF the tolerance is too wide. On a MXT or DFX it wouldn't matter. It's a crap shoot and I don't do well at the casinos either.

I do better in the sand in front of the casinos.

That is interesting that you run Mixed Mode in Mono Neil. I had a Nautilus IIB and loved the ability to adjust the sound of the iron in one ear (low) and discriminate in the other (higher) with my Grey Ghost headphones (which I still have). If you ground isn't trashy I can see running it in mono, but if it is trashy the only thing to stop from getting audio fatigue would be to really turn down the iron side - but then you might miss those deep hums! Hmmm I will have to try it out again when I find a cleaner patch of ground.

I totally see what you mean though and hadn't thought about it before. Running in MM gives you a sign (hum) to look at a target that maybe wasn't enough under the coil to give a discriminate beep. After using the 950 coil for the first time a few weeks ago I would see MM as being even more important with it as that coil clearly had a much smaller sweat spot regarding getting a beep from a target. (And the Nautilus comes with a concentric).
