d2 coil problems

How can you tell if your coil is bad? My wife and I took our Mxt 300 with a 12" coil and our new ( 2-3 mos old) Mxt Pro with the D2 coil on it. The Mxt 300 was awesome but the Pro was making a pulsating sound no matter where you put the settings and if you set the coil on the ground and do not move it and pull the trigger to pinpoint, the VDI numbers jump around very eratic. My battery voltage says 12. I'm thinking that maybe I should change to another coil... I also have the 5.3 and a 12" coil for it. Any other info or advice would be greatly appreciated. This was the Pros maiden voyage 'cause I work alot of hours at work and have been unable to go MDing. On the brighter side though, I was at the beach with my wife and my 3 year old son Kenny and my 28 year old daughter and my 12 year old granddaughter............... Life is great...... I plan on doing the same thing next weekend weather permitting. Jack

If you switched coils and the problem went away, I'd say the problem was a bad coil. Another possibility is that the D2 coil has a bad reputation of falsing on salt water beaches if that is where you are. I would suggest using the 12" on your Pro at the beach and the 5.3 if it is very trashy. Try the D2 again away from the beach and if the noise continues, call White's or take it back to your dealer. Good luck on the beach.

Thanks Larry.... We were using it at the beach 'cause I forgot to pack the other 12" coil so I went with the D2 which was already on it. I'll try changing out the coil and let you know how I make out.

Jack,
Try turning the MXT 300 off. See if the pulsing is still there.
The two Mxt's will cross talk if you are hunting close together.
Also I find that running a smaller DD coil on one of the machines helps.
Hope you work it out and don't have a bad coil.

HH

I'd think if it was cross talk, it would be apparent in both machines? I know my MXT and a friend's M6 cross talk the worst I've experienced between two detectors.

I haven't had the time to try a different coil yet but if my detectors are cross talking, how do you fix it. Also, why wouldn't it effect my MXT 300? I'm hoping it's just a bad coil and nothing to do with the Pro itself. I'm planning on going out again this coming weekend and I need both machines. I told my wife.... I hope you find something really neat 'cause then you'll be hooked and then I'll have a beautiful partner.... Her response was she was already hooked after the very first time finding a cut nail. Now if I can only get my 3 yr old to dig my holes....LOL. The MXT 300 is now her machine and the Pro is mine and mine may be broke....DARN.... I guess maybe I'll be doing her diggin'..... HH Jack

I also use a brand new (this season)10" DD on my DFX or MXT.
It does false a bit with the gain turned up on either machine, and is susceptible to EMI, especially near aircraft flight paths.
Also, when my MXT using hunting partner, using a 4x6 coil gets near me, I can hear the 'static'.
On the other hand, the 10" DD coil gets great depth and pinpointing is as good as the 950 concentric.
The coil is very sensitive. So, it's a trade-off for me to get the extra depth.

The "pulsing" sounds like machines cross-talking. Not sure why the Pro would have the interference and the 300 didn't. Did you check the threshold setting on the 300 to see if it was high enough for you to hear any interference (pulsing) from the Pro ? Other than that my only guess is the difference in the 2 machines behavior may be a result of the different coils used as Larry referred to . . .good luck.

well, I had a chance to test out the MXT 3oo and the Pro..... I tried the Pro with the D2 coil w/out the 300 running and it seemed to work fine. Then I tried it with the 300 on and the Pro started acting erratic and the noise was pulsating. with the 300 still on, I walked across my yard a good 50-60 feet before the Pro calmed down. Now my yard is not salt so it's possible that it doesn't do well with salt. My wife, son and myself are taking the two machines to the ocean and we will try the D2 there again. As of now, both are set up with 12" coils. When I tried the D2 around my yard on the Pro, it was going off here and there in an area that I've never detected before. I wanted to dig but I was out of time. I know where I'm going to check next week. It's an area of my yard that never saw any fill or excavation. I only cut the brush down, left the big trees and sprinkled some grass seed. I'll keep you all posted ... Take care ...HH Jack from south eastern New Hampshire
