Finally the D2 coils hit OZ and I got to use one.
Straight to the nitty gritty. On small targets, gold under 1/2 gram, it does not have the sensitivity like the DD 10 x 6 Eclipse, you would imagine that this would be the case as Elliptical coils give a sharper response. Very small bits that are very close to the coil give a slightly broken response as opposed to the sharp ping on the 10x6. Bigger bits from 1/2 g upwards sound better but right up close to the coil, mm from it, still don't sound as good as those further or deeper from it.
For very small gold near the surface it is not the coil of choice. On large bits of a few grams up to ounces it bangs them in nice and clear and matches the 10x6 DD. But, I was hard pressed to see a definite depth advantage over the 10x6. But, with this slight sensitivity difference it does operate a bit quieter in noisy ground so is an advantage in that department. Being an open web design though does make it clumsy on the ground when hunting around rocky and stick littered sites causing you to come to an abrupt halt when you catch it up. Wanting to hunt as close to the ground and having this happen when you do in these hunting scenarios is annoying. In my mind it is a coin coil or for use where there is an open type environment in bad ground where its advantages will show. Sounds negative from a gold hunters point of view but what is , is.
As coin and relic hunters don't have the worry of having to ping in the little minuscule targets that we gold seekers do I imagine that none of the negatives I mentioned will even slot into the equation and they will find it a great coil of choice. A bit more ground coverage, light, handles bad mineralisation really well and well suited to their purpose. For coin hunters its full of positives. Maybe too with the differences in target conductivity, the metals and alloys which coins are made out of being very different to gold nuggets, could show a marked difference in depth as opposed to that found on gold. I don't know!
I know it was not predominantly designed with the Gold seeker in mind, we have the top notch choices of the 10x6 DD, the six shooter DD and the 5.3 Eclipse concentric for that but as some want to know how it goes or went on gold nuggets I did the test.
More choices are always good and the more the better
