D.Cameras, looking for opinions......

I am looking for a basic model, nothing high priced.I went to a couple of digital camera websites and it seems that 3 models would fit my budget: Kodak DX7590, Panasonic DMC-FZ5,
Nikon 5700. I can get them from 325 to 405, The Nikon is a refirb price. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I would rather spend a few dollars more and get a new camera. I have a Nikon Coolpix 5700 digital camera that takes beautiful pictures in the AUTO MODE. I use the AUTO MODE because I have not learned how to use all the buttons and controls yet...but I am confident that it will do just about anything that I might ever want to do with it. RM, a professional picture taker, uses Nikon equipment and he may be able to give you some suggestions. John in Florida is another one that knows about digital cameras, and while he is not a professional picture taker like RM, he could also give you some advice. Wish you the best. Please have a great day! Kelley (Texas) :)

Steve, here's my opinion.

Forget the Kodak. It's very important to get the best lens you can and the Kodak lens isn't as sharp as the other two camera's lenses...

The Nikon 5700 has been discontinued for some time now. It was introduced over 3 years ago. So I would look elsewhere...

The Panasonic has a Leica designed 12X zoom stabalized lens. The lens is 2.8-3.3 which means that the maximum aperture goes down less than half a stop throughout the zoom range.

Of the three cameras you mention I would get the FZ5 and I would even consider the larger FZ20 since it's the same price.

I hope this helps and don't make a decision just based on my opinion. Check out this web site for more info: www.dpreview.com

Cheers!!!

John

Just that it has been discontinued and technology keeps on moving right along. A new FZ5 can be had for the same price as a refurbished 5700.

If there is anyway you can get to a camera store and get cameras in your hand to try out that would be the best way to make a decision. Comparing data over the internet is ok but you should get the cameras in your hand and have the store personnel go over it with you. Just stay with brand names like Canon,Nikon,Kodak,Fuji and Panasonic. Although Kodak is in a state of flux right now and I would suggest that you really examine their models closely if you want one of theirs.

Comparing "mumbo jumbo" data then making a decision based on that without having the camera in your hand is risky.

Lots of Pro Photographers would have a Nikon 5700 in their bag for insurance a few years back. In it's day it was fine camera but technology has changed. It's your money and budget.

RM's .02

but I kinda think that at this time that the Nikon Coolpix 5700 will hold it's own with the other two cameras mentioned.

John have you seen or know anyone that has used the Sony DSC-H1 camera? I have always been of the opinion that Sony makes great point and shoot cameras. My son gave me his old Sony DSC-S85 camera and I must say that I am impressed with it. It is easier to use than my Nikon 5700, but lacks the zoom capability and is not as good in the macro mode. In fairness, I probably should not be posting very much because I do not have the photography experience that you and many others have on the forum. please have a great day! Kelley (Texas) :)

Kelly, if a 5700 were available new I would recommend it! I did a quick search and couldn't find one at a reasonable price.

Regarding the Sony, I don't know anyone who has that model..
