CZ70 Sensitivity

RLOH

Well-known member
I have been using CZ's for about seven years and previous to the 70 I currently use, I had a 7a pro. I actually prefer the 3d, 5, and 6a over the digital version as they give you slightly more control over the settings. I have always set my sens at 4 with the 7 and 70 and the volume at 4 so it is modulated. The deep coins with any CZ is very unique and after digging many, the repeatable tick is music to my ears. I almost always dig coins deeper than 8 inches with my new 70 and today I decided to see what happens to the 8 inch deep wheat penny. I could get a high tick from two angles with the sens at 4, but it was a weak signal. I could hear it just fine with my phones, but this time I wanted to see what happened with the sens upped to 6. Without changing the volume on the detector or phones, the signal got louder and even more distinct. I dug the coin and it was an eight inch deep wheat penny. I kept the sens at 6 and tried hunting the same ground and the detector was unstable, lots of chirping. Whey did the engineers set up the detector in increments of two? I am no electronics guru, but if the adjustments were segmented by one number instead of two, the fine tuning on the digital CZ's would be greatly improved. I think a setting of 5 on the 70 would be perfect. The stability between 4 and 6 is dramatic. I know on my CZ3d, 5, and 6a, I would be able to set the volume and sens to just below 5 and they would be perfect. I think that I'm not perfect on the 70, just close. R.L.

Being that you know your CZ's maybe you can answer my question. What is the difference between CZ-7a Pro and the CZ-70? Does it go deeper or is the difference very small(depth/features)? The reason I ask is that I want to get a CZ70 but wouldn't mind saving money on the CZ7a pro.

Thank You,
Ernie

Ernie, to my knowledge, the only difference is the 70 has 4 tones and 7apro, 3 tones. There seems to be no difference in depth in the two that I have owned. Maybe Detector Dan can jump in here and offer his advice as he is the guru of CZ's. By the way, I bought a CZ6a from Dan a couple of years back and it was the hottest CZ that I ever owned. It seemed to be slightly deeper than the previous CZ's that I used. I wish I had that detector back. R.L.

the main difference betweenthe two,is the 4th tone.the (relic tone)..it allows you to dig metal that falls between the other two tones!..sort of a "half ass" tone so to speak!..i had one,and even though i am sure it works on odd conductive metal,it also will sound off on square tabs too!.if you get a relic,or 4th tone indication on the 70,then check the depth, and if it is beyond 2 inches, dig it!

All CZ's arejust about the same depth but some seem to be set a little hotter.
When the went from CZ7A pro to the CZ70 pro they changed the square tab Icon to relics and gave that area a different tone..Also I believe they changed the sens. parameters a bit and 4 seems to work well on CZ70's while some areas allow you to set the sens. to 6 or 8 on the CZ7A pro but either way you get approx. the same depth. All in all just about the same unit.
Indeed analog CZ's can be set more precise from 1 to 10 such as 4.5 while the digital you have to set 2-4-6..Certainly not an electronics guy but must have something to dig with digital over analog and indeed the analog is more accurate. Sort of went backwards on that one..In any case in my book any CZ is a winner no matter what model and many preer either...Remember you mention CZ7A and that is a rodmount only so be careful if you hipmount and thats the CZ7A pro.. yo need for hipmounting...

RL,
I have been using a CZ-70 Pro since just after it was introduced. I happened to start detecting again at that time after not detecting for about 20 years. I also happened to live in an 1894 farmhouse at the time with a built in full of old coins natural yard garden(coin field) and a couple of blocks of neighbors with similar houses that all let me detect :) After a lot of research, I chose the CZ-70. Since that first machine, I have tried almost all the CZ's-5, 6A and many 3D's, CoinStrike, EX XS, II, DFX, X-Terra 50 & 70 to name most of them-I still love the simplicity of the machine, stability around powerlines, and speed which I can hunt new ground. I actually prefer the digital over the analog version since the little needle drove me nuts, it was harder to see, and none of the others had a backlight. Granted the analog do give you quite a bit more control over the settings, but I'm not a fan of knobs. I usually set my sens at 4 with the 70 in iron filled or trashy ground and 6 in the same ground to get the real deepies really without a problem with multiple machines(I've probably had more CZ-70's in my possession for comparison testing over the years than anyone out there besides Fisher) and the volume at 10 so the modulation is still present but reduced. I too feel that segments of one for the sensitivity would have been nice but??? Of all the CZ-70's I have used, almost all would be very usable and definitely go deeper at 6 in my ground, even in iron too. For ME, the CZ-70 is about the perfect detector-I have used one for hundreds of hours at too many to count sites all over Ohio and some other states-I really feel the Zen with this detector particularly after reading Tom Dankowski's CZ-70 Field Test and Advanced Hunting Techniques for the CZ-70 and really understanding what is written- a 3 tone CZ cannot do what a 4 tone one can exactly...I think it sure helps sort out all those midtones a bit to help one decide what to dig although I still love the 3D for it's ability to sort the midtones out even better for old coins but the CZ-70 was much more consistent with it's tuning for nickels...one thing is for sure is that everyone out there usually finds a machine that they're most comfortable with. I have spent so much time and especially money over the years to find one I like better overall without a winner for me. I've decided to just stick with the 70 with a lifetime warranty and have be happy...more time hunting like in the beginning and no more thinking about finding a better machine...JMHO...HH

I had previously used the CZ-5 and like you, always fine tuned it in the 4.5 to 5.5 sens range depending on the site. Crank the 70 to 6 and its unuseable in old iron sites in my ground and at 4 lacks the sens/audio response of the fine tuneable CZ-5. A real deal killer for sure.

usemy cz70pro much of the time. I bought one with a lifetime warranty about 2 months before I bought my SE. I can run the sens at 6 and sometimes venture up to 8 in some locations. If I want a failsafe no falsing setup...I keep it at 4...especially in trashy areas. If you run the volume at 4 though...the little "tick" on a nice deepie is much better with the sens at 6 or more...at least for me. It's nice to see someone else still pounding with the cz70. It will honestly get me every bit the same depth as my SE.

the cz-70 IS a premier coin shooter..i loved mine, however the balance
really sucked!..of course i knew this when i bought it,but decided i would hip mount it all the time!..it was ok for a while, then it really got to be a pain in the a** especially on hot days!.the truth is,i would STILL have it if it was balanced better!..and i just didn't
want to hip mount any more!..i can tell you that IF i was looking to buy another one,i would opt for the cz7-a because they will be cheaper
to purchase used than the 70 which is a newer model!..i say this because even though the 70 has the relic mode,i never saw any real advantage hunting with it!..that mode loved square tabs, and that's all i really found in the relic mode!..so get the cz7-a which would be a better deal with the same power, and digital readout, and circuitry!

For me, the balance isn't too bad compared to the Explorer although on hot days it does get heavy...I almost always use the stock 8 inch coil. I was surprised many a time with the relic icon...I popped an 1864 IH right out of my neighbor's front yard that was a deep relic signal. I popped a silver war nickel out of my own old house front yard...both of these right after the first Tom Dankowski booklet came out with the CZ-70 articles...I have found many more goodies that hit straight relic on the 70 but I also found lots of junk too---big iron and all kinds of old stuff-I should have kept it all in separate bins from each site I've hunted for the learning experience...maybe I'll start to do it when I have time...HH
