CZ6A...Zinc Penny Magnet!

New member
I have had the cz6a about a month now and have noticed it very seldom will I.D. a zinc penny as a zinc penny. 95 percent of the time it will come up as silver. I am getting sick of expecting silver or at least a real copper penny , and getting a zinc. My Ace 250 will ID them correctly almost every time so I can choose to dig or leave it. I have recovered some deep silver coins up to 10 inches with the cz which I could never do with the Ace 250.. So I am using it instead of the Ace 250. but digging zincs takes time away from possible silver recovery. Any one else have this problem.? .

May be very slightly out of tune. My 6a is pretty good on ID of zinc pennies. I normally dig them ... and very seldomly find the 6a has the ID wrong. On really eaten up zincs, the ID may be a tab; but that is expected.

Thanks tvr, my next question is how would I re-tune it. I recently sent it to fisher labs for another problem and they said they re-calibrated it. Is that what you mean by re-tune? ...

On mine any penny older than 1982 comes in as dime or possible silver. The make up was different on pennies before 1982.

Yes prodrigser; I have verified that they are zinc by cleaning them when I get home to check the dates. The cz6 does find "copper" pennies in the silver section. The few zincs that were id`d as zincs are very shallow, less than 2 inches. I guess i`ll have to be happy with zincs.

It does sometime happen that silver coins come in lower in Id because of other metal close to the, and Indian head pennies, and older wheats came in at the Zinc signal. Very heavy mens gold rings can fall in that catagory as well. If you are hunting sites where these situations exist it is best to dig the zincs.

Pre 1983 pennies including some wheaties will come in same as a dime on any unit on the planet..Indian heads will come in zinc penny along with actual zinc pennies
after 1983 and early indian heads may even come in square tab...Your meter is not perfect as all depends on the metalic content of the coin and pennies varied greatly over the years..

OK OK, I`ll keep digging the zincs. Maybe something good will happen. I hit on a silver ring and another ring that has 3 small diamond like stones this evening., I`ve got it soaking in jewelry cleaner and will check it in the morning. The ring signal was pull tab. The 2 rings were about 10 feet apart. Go figure.

Yes re-calibrated is what I meant by re-tune.

So ... not sure why your 6a is only ID'ing zinc's as zinc's at a couple of inches. Was at the beach with my 6a last week and it was ID'ing zincs very well from surface to quite deep ... and I dig them all. As others noted, Indian heads normally ID as zinc too. I ran mostly salt mode, but the little bit of dry sand / normal mode hunting I did, the zincs ID'd properly too.

Congrats on the rings!

Are you hunting in Salt or Normal mode? If it's ID'ng Zincs as silver in Normal mode, try switching over to Salt and if it's tuned correctly it should correctly ID...at least I think so. Been told that the CZ-3D will ID as hightone/silver in Enhance mode when over zincs but when you switch to Salt it will read ok. Also...if the unit id indicating correct depth and you're diggin' 'em up at 2" then perhaps you should ignore the very shallow silver signals...unless you have a good inkling you may find a relatively recent drop of a silver ring. I would think a silver coin (pre '6:geek: would've sunk more than 2" but that's entirely dependent on your soil conditions. 1800's coins in Nova Scotia are found at 4" in some areas. That's pretty shallow for something that's been in the ground for over 200yrs.

Good luck.

Thanks I will try the salt mode next time and see if it makes a difference. Today I was digging zincs from 2 to 6 inches. Total of 18 zincs, CZ signalled about 6 zincs which I did`nt dig. 5 quarters, 6 dimes, 3 nickels and 5 real copper pennies from 1959 to 1981. I did find a 1940 Wheat at 3 inches they all rang in as silver. When I get a 6 inch target I`m half way dreaming about silver. Big disappointment when silver dreams turn to Zinc. Thanks for the tip and I will let you know what happens. I think I`ll go out and air test with various coins in salt mode to see what happens..Thanks again!

Did air tests with cz6a in salt mode and it did recognize zincs as zincs. Also no difference in depth noticed today in salt mode at local park. I only had 2 false zincs which rang up as silver. I got a bunch of zinc signals which I verified as zincs . Also found clads but no silver. Found one small ring in pull tab range which looks lke a gold plate with some gold worn off the bottom of the ring. Thanks for the help!
