Cz6a and Sun Ray FZ-12 question

Well-known member
Has anyone used the Sun ray FZ-12 coil on their CZ6a ? I went to the beach today and used the 6a ( haven't in a while and I forgot how good it is) but I have the stock 8 inch coil. I was wondering if anyone has experience using the Sunray coil. I was thinking of getting one for better coverage and depth on the beach. I want to use the 6a as a backup detector to my Excal ( and sometimes as the first option) since I can hip mount it to make it lighter when the old shoulder acts up.

Also, another question...do any of you who use the 6a ( or 6, 5) when ground balancing in salt mode, that sometimes there is no change from 10 to 1 ? Just a question since I have not used the 6a in awhile and was wondering if my salt switch was working correctly. The machine seemed fine in both modes, but ground balance in the normal mode was around 7 or 8, but there was no change when using the salt mode. I was at an NJ beach today so I was balancing in wet, salt, sand.

Thanks !

Yep that pricey 12 inch Sunray coil, pinpoints well and just for ground coverage alone would be worth it however also expect several inches of extra depth and should be a good addition to your CZ...
As far as the ground balance goes wet salt water can do strange things and as the manual says if it won't ground balance just put it in preset and go from there. As it ground balances in normal conditions I would doubt you have any problems...
CZ is a great beach unit and with the extra ground coverage and depth expect more goodies in the pouch. Might try decreasing sensitivty also as that could be your ground balance problem...I never could run any of my CZ's as high sens. wise in the salt sand conditions..

Dan, thanks for the info. I can't run my CZ with too much sensitivity as it falses. I am normally at 3 or 4...5 max. I am debating the coil but with the extra coverage and depth it may be worth it.

I was running in autotune most of the time and when I got a target, switched to discrim mode. I liked hunting that way. It was easy and I felt I got a little extra depth and stability in autotune.

All I can say when I hunted large beaches in my younger days the coil would be a blessing.
From experience can't say Autotune is actually much deeper but seems to cover more area and many use your method. Works great in an isolated area without much junk but would not recommend for junky areas....

Dan,

The main reason I am using autotune is that there aren't many targets in certain areas, and using it does cover more area. When I hit a pocket of targets, I switch to discrim and slow down.

I think I am going to get the coil.
