CZ5 Target ID question

My first question is applies to swinging in the same direction and the second question is turning 90 deg from the target. Thanks for the help.
1. When hunting just below the nickel on the disc and when you swing over your target and the first couple swings it shows solid tab and still swinging in the same direction it suddenly switches and hits on quarter, dime or nickel, what would that be?
2. One more thing, In one direction if it hits solid on tab, then turn 90 deg. and it hits solid on zinc, nickel, dime or quarter, what could this be?

Thanks Hawg. Im trying to gather info as if I had one. Im considering trying to get one of these CZ's and any info helps before hand.

I'm of the opinion that a CZ in discriminate mode should be set at the zero setting. Lets you listen to all the tones and you get the additional information of most bottle caps breaking to a low tone at least some of the time. I have had some brand new bottle caps stay mid-tone tab to zinc, but not many.

Second opinion; if you hunt salt water beaches, CZ's, even the oldest of them, are still among the best over the wet sand.

I've been collecting tips on these machines and trying to memorize some of them. I figure if I do this I will be ahead of the game when it's time to get one.
I was reading where you could pick up the coin through masking of the iron or tabs. How does the machine act? Will it do like I described above in the first post where you may here the iron and coin tones?
Thanks for the help.

My sugestion........

Dig those up and see what it is, shortining the learning curve is what it is all about. Don't be afraid to dig, could be a close grouping of coins or coin near pulltab or about any combo of mulitiple targets is possible. Just my opinion.

I tend to agree with Tvr that it is best to run your discrimination at zero when hunting coins or relics. If you up the discrimination and cut out the iron signals you are eliminating an important piece of information about what your CZ-5 is trying to tell you. A mixed signal may be a good target or it may be iron. Running at zero discrimination lets you hear the low, mid and high tones. That allows your mind to do the "processing" to help determine if it is a good signal or iron junk. Also on mixed signals don't forget to check your depth. Mixed or broken signals could be trash or it could be a deep good target. Good luck with your 5. CZ's are great machines; a little heavy compared to newer models but deep, simple to use and built to last.

I agree with TVR and hombre i always run in Zero Disc and i also dig anything that bounces around in those ranges the Detector is saying man i don't know what it is , the only way to tell is dig it up. i like running in Zero because i think you get better separation from Iron and also if your Discriminating iron i think it makes you not dig some of those iffy coin signal, it makes them sound Choppy.

I don't have a CZ5, but I hunted for a while with iron notched out on my CZ7 and passed up many choppy signals... Those that advised here to listen to the iron are correct, as one of the club members advised I was probably missing some good finds as a result of havnig iron notched out... Went back and located some of those choppy signals, this time listening to iron, and was amazed at the keepers I passed over... I've recently purchased a CZ3D and always listen to the iron now and have placed many keepers in my pouch as a result...

Where I'm cornfused is: do you here the iron and then the coin signal? how does a good signal sound coming through the iron? or does it bounce back and forth between iron and coin?
Thanks for the help!

You hear both; sometimes one more than the other. Just pinpoint and check the depth to see if you are getting a mixed signal from a deep target.Check it at right angles and from multiple directions. Also, a coin will give you a smaller more compact and localized signal and will pinpoint very well. A iron target (such as a rusted bottle cap) will appear to be wider and more difficult to pinpoint. A rusted nail for example may give a good compact signal when you cross it perpendicular to lengthwise. Then try it at right angle (parallel to lengthwise) and it will give a longer/larger signal. Make a mental note of the target sound, depth, tone or tones and then dig to see what the detector was telling you.

Very true Phantom very true the hardest masking scenario for me is not iron or any signal that gives you another tone it's the trash that gives a high tone that is almost impossible to separate from a very close coin. but the truth is there is so many great finds still out there masked by trash and we don't even know they are there.

I'm not familiar with Garretts machines but it may. Just don't confuse all metal mode with zero discrimination. All metal mode, or as Fisher calls it Auto Tune, uses no discrimination at all where as when we say zero discrimination we are referring to discrimination mode at it's lowest setting.
