CZ5 in Salt Water?

Dixie Digger

New member
has anyone here run the CZ's on wet salt sand? if so what mode did you like or have the best performance with? does the salt mode work ok? I'm heading for the Gulf Coast next week and never had my CZ5 in salt water.thanks Dixie Digger

Bearing in mind all saltwater beaches differ and even the same one from one tide to another salt mode works quite well in the wet salt sand but may have to lower sens in some cases from your normal land sens...Do be careful as metal detector electronics and salt water do not mix and if you drop, fall or get hit with a wave could cause problems..

DON'T GET IT WET! I use a CZ-5 as my main land unit. I hunt in SALT mode all the time anyway, to help with mineralization in the dirt. SALT mode does lower the Sensitivity slightly, and you may not hit on smaller gold items as strongly while in SALT mode.

A couple of other pointers: Switch to SALT mode BEFORE you ground-balance the unit. You should always redo the GB when you switch from NORMAL to SALT and back. Also, GB where you're going to hunt. If you're hunting the wet salt sand, GB in the wet salt sand. If you're searching the dry stuff, GB there. Also, from what I've read, you can probably expect more depth in wet salt sand than on dry land. This is because the wet salt is conductive. Another point, about GB'ing, is that you can expect a radically different position on the knob than what you're used to. Remember, the Gulf Coast doesn't have a lot of minerization, so you can expect a wide area of arc on the knob to give you a "sweet" ground-balance.

Heck you might even get away without the salt mode in dry sand or moist sand...Do experiment as some beaches are like night and day.
Remember its a good idea to dig all as gold jewelry can show up on any facet of the CZ5 and a plasic bag wrapped over the control box is a good idea as sand blows and one grain of saltsand is corrosive and above all clean your unit with a damp coldwater rag at the end of the day to neutralize even that one speck of sand..Surely one of the weather resistant CZ's would be a better choice but the 5 should be fine with a litlle care and caution..Along with the Sov. surely the CZ is the unit for saltsand beaches...Many who do not hipmount on land do so on beaches as it leaves an arm free for digging and you can protect the control box better...
