CZ3D ID and Depth Needle

Hi guys,

I recently bought a used CZ3D from a reputable dealer, and it works fine without any problems. I did however notice that when the machine is off or on, and not over a target, the needle indicator is pegged all the way right in the silver range. The unit ID's perfectly as well as depth; if I hit iron it shows iron etc. so I don't think it really matters as far as proper ID or depth read is concerned. I have seen photos and some videos where the needle 'appears to be left by default' , so I am wondering if the peg right is normal, a function of something that I may or may not be doing, or just an anomaly? No problems with operation, but curious what the norm is.

Very Best Regards, Carlos

Hi Carlos. My unit does the same thing. Works fine for me.

That is weird as mine is opposite of your's as default all the way left below iron. As a matter of fact every analog I had was same. That's strange but if works fine no biggie I guess.

That has the needle pegged out. Also if I remember right, rub the meter face with a piece of Wool. Just do what ever you do to get rid of static electricity. It has been a long time since I had to do my 6A or my 3D. Anyway try that with power off your machine. HH Jerry aka Tinfoil

ah hah! The notion had occurred to me about static. I will give it a try next weekend hopefully. Thank You!

Always Best, Carlos

Let us know if it works as have heard about the fabric sheet tip for years but never had a issue to try it on.

Finally got around to trying the dryer sheet bit, but still the same. The unit ID's properly, and if I use low discrimination, all the targets are detected and ID'd correctly. If I use disc all the way up to disc zinc,
then of course the needle never really moves since it's pegged right, where it would ID anyways. Not a big deal, but I wish it worked like my CZ-5, without the anomaly. I may put it up for auction on the big E, but im not sure it will get any takers, since I will have to describe the anomaly, and it may deter any interest. And its not a Los Banos, which I know folks chat about.

Owned more than one analog over the years and always returned to far left...malfunction somewhere I would feel...

I have spent some considerable time working with the CZ3D and discovered some things. There are a few different ways to ground balance the unit, the push button method works best for me, I hunt mostly school yards. The needle still defaults right, but it ID's just fine, particularly with a good ground balance. Also what I though was an issue with the zinc discrimination in enhanced mode, appears to be inherent in the design? At least thats what I gathered from a couple of videos on you tube, one by Texas Tiger Digs, and one by Dirt Fishing; in ENHANCED MODE, zinc pennies with get lumped into the silver quadrant even if the discriminator is set to notch out zinc. However, when the switch is toggled to SALT MODE, the zinc penny drops out as it should. I gathered from Texas Tiger's video that this is useful in terms of finding jewelry, which I can agree with. As far as the needle defaulting to the right, it remains an anomaly I guess, Tiger's needle sems to behave as the norm; the needle resides left, and Dirt Fishing's needle defaults right like on my CZ3D. Overall, Im pleased that made some new discoveries by putting in some extra time with the unit.

Yes, it's by design.

The 3D is meant to expand the acceptance range to help you find the older, more desirable coins.

Zinc pennies I.D. EXACTLY the same as Indian Head pennies. If you don't want to lose IH cents, you have to dig zincs, as well.
But as you discovered...if you're in a modern/newer area, you can switch to salt mode to knock out the stinkin' zincs.

(You'll lose a little depth doing that, but a modern area won't have the older/deeper coins, anyway.)

The CZ3D has been working great, but I decided to thin my collection and keep my CZ5 and 1212X. The CZ3D is now in auction at the mainstream auction site..the big E.

Thanks again everyone for your kindness and sharing your expertise.

Good luck with the sale, Carlos, hope it does well for you.

I looked at the listing and I'm confused about the s/n sticker.

It shows as being a 1021 unit but also says El Paso.

Since all 1021 s/n units were manufactured by the old Fisher in Los Banos, perhaps it was refurbished by the "new" Fisher in El Paso?

If it is an actual 1021 unit it might help you to emphasize that in your listing.

Thank you Sir. yes, I poked around on google about the 1021 aspect, and found that all conversation are about Los Banos 1021. Since I have no idea about how El Paso came into play, I chose to just leave the photo without actually calling it out in the listing, since I wouldn't be able to give any type of good answer if someone were to ask about El Paso. Thanks though for the well wishes and lookin out for me. The unit is actually fantastic, but I do have a CZ5 I am accustomed to, and I do have a bit of a surplus. I know the unit will serve someone well, and the asking initial opening bid is fair and decent. Hoping to make a fellow detectorist happy with a sweet hookup... priceless.
