CZ21 Coil Choice

Which coil do you use with the CZ-21 8" or 101/2", I can't seem to decide which coil would be better for general hunting? Thanks for your thoughts:canadaflag:

I've got a CZ20 with 8 inch coil ... very similar to CZ21.

Fresh, salt, and how is the water movement where you expect to hunt?

Fresh water doesn't break down the small trash like salt does. Fairly dense trash, the 8 inch is better for target separation and less masking. Some fresh water places I've been are pretty clean; not a lot of water movement, I'd go 10.5 inch if those types of places are where you expect to hunt most of the time, just to get the ground coverage.

Most of my water hunting ends up being salt water beaches that have a fair amount of water movement. The relatively thick spider coils on the CZ's present a lot of drag when the water moves. The 8 inch is enough drag for me when there is a fair amount of water movement. I don't think I'd want the 10.5 inch with a lot of water movement. I also have a Sand Shark with a flat disc coil. That flat disc presents much less water drag and 10.5 inches of flat disk is less work than the 8 inch on the CZ20.

The 8 inch is also a little more sensitive to smaller targets ... may give you a little better shot at earring studs ... if those don't fall through the scoop!

Over all, I'd lean towards the 8 inch for most in the water hunting with a CZ.

I will be hunting fresh water beachs with ankle deep and neck deep at times, I have hunted with Excalibers & the BHID 300 which I am currently using in all metal; amazing depth on this one almost as good as my Dual Field PI for depth. I too am leaning towards the 8" coil but am hoping others will share their choice of coil & why. Thankyou for your great reply TVR

H2oman, I have both (CZ-20's) prefer the 8" in trashy areas, 10.5" in non trashy areas for better depth? I personally don't think there is much differance, in depth that is. the 8" moves thru the water better for sure and isn't moved by currents quite as easily as the 10.5" as described by tvr. I would add one other observation, if you do get a cz20, 21 or 1280x to use in the water take the control off the shaft and put it on a belt or chestmount it REALLY reduces the amount of energy needed to move the coil thru the water!

Here is a picture of my setup.

Hope this helps

Steve

It has a great deal to do with the area you hunt. small coil best for junky areas and big coil best for cleaner areas with deeper targets.

I might mention that i have had a great deal of trouble getting my CZ 21 repaired.

What sort of problems are you having with the CZ-21 that it needs repairs? I went with the 8" coil on the CZ-21, for the trashy areas and use the Dual Field PI with a 12" coil out deep where there is less trash. Thanks for all the information guys!

Let me guess, the headphones appear to be of poor quality, maybe a guy can switch them out to a decent pair of Grey Ghosts or something similar like a pair of Troy Pro Headphones for shallow water hunting?
