CZ20: anyone heard of this?

Just read this on the "Golden Olde" about the CZ20:

"I had thought that the CZ20 was fairly sensitive but I need to let you know that I was using an old trick on it to boost the sensitivity to the max. I had cut out sponges to fill the headphones so the loud sound would not hurt my ears. The reason that I did this was so I could run the volume ALL THE WAY UP. You might ask why would I want to do a crazy thing like that and the reason is that the CZ20 has a receiver boost feature that works the best at full volume and so I always set my detector for the maximum sensitivity possible. "

does anyone heard of this, or tried this method? does it really work to increase the sensitivity and depth?

Faint targets have faint audio signals, that's what audio boost is for. As far as I'm aware, audio boost is strictly an audio function, not a target/signal enhancement. Turning it up will only make a difference if you frequently walk over targets that sound faint and do not stop to check and recheck them to be sure you don't want to dig.

If you dig faint signals at moderate volume ranges anyway, you're getting the deep stuff.

When you set the volume above 5, you are invoking the audio boost feature. It is not a sensitivity boost, but what it does is make the tone hit on the target louder than if the volume was set below 5.

When below 5, the deeper targets are softer in sound loudness wise as opposed to shallow targets. When you push the volume about 5+, the deep targets are just louder in sound, but you are not going any deeper.

It is a good feature when beach hunting because of the abient noise of the wind and surf. You don't want to miss a deep target due to the faint hit when the volume is at the lower settings because you cannot hear it. Its also a great feature when dirt hunting, so you can differentiate the shallow targets from the deeper ones without having to check out the depth every time. That soft high tone hit is something you want to hear when dirt hunting. Could be a nice, deep, older coin.

Since I dig all targets except low tones when beach hunting, I always have the volume pushed past 5 on all my CZ's.
