Well, I hate to admit it, but I have been almost shut out on silver this year. I have my new LTD and it has found some deep Indians but no silver. My lone silver coin was snagged with the CZ and it was a 1942 nickle. Today, I was determined to find silver. I hunted, and hunted a lot and dug junk, trash, and no silver. I was really getting discouraged and had invested two or three hours already. I went home, grabbed a sandwich and went out for one last look.
I went to an old grove area that had produced silver for me in the past.
I decided to use the CZ3 and hunt slow. It paid off with a few coins, but no silver. I was still digging plenty of junk. I was enjoying hunting with the CZ and feeling like I was going to find something. I got a faint signal and pinpointed it at 8 inches. I dug eight and had nothing. I had a glimmer of doubt but after taking another two or three inches of dirt out of the hole the pinpointer was screaming again. One last dig and I had the target out. I could see a huge rim and I was thinking silver dollar but it wasn't. I brushed it off and found one side with cool art work and one side with a name. As soon as I figured out I was holding a Civil War piece I was done. Headed home, gave it a bath and was amazed to have the soldier's name, unit and company on the medal.
I have been reading about the Ohio 78 since. These guys got it done. My veteran made it through the war and eventually moved from Ohio to Indiana. He is buried in our local cemetery and his name appears on our Civil War monument. I still haven't found much silver but I am real happy to have dug this today.
On this day 148 years ago my veteran and his Company were headed for Shiloh.
