CZ Coil cord cracks?

cometguy

Active member
I know I have seen a post a long time ago about the black cove on the CZ coil wire cracking. I recently picked up a nice CZ3d 1021 that looked perfect. When I took it apart and cleaned it things looked fine. When I got ready to re-wrap the cord on the shaft I noticed a few small splits that let the white insulation show through. This seems to be in the last 1.5 foot of the cable. I have flexed and bent the lower part of the cable and it seems fine. The detector air tests over 10 inches at 5 sensitivity so I think it is a good one. What things can I try? Anybody have success or failure stories about this problem?

If it is on the box end of the coil cut off the 2 ft and resolder on the connector.

Cometguy, If YOU CAN'T follow Rob's Suggestion, then ANOTHER Option is to TAPE IT!! Go to a WEST MARINE Store and Buy some "RESCUE TAPE"!! I found out about that
Stuff last Spring while in Florida!! That TAPE is GREAT!! I used it on a couple of my EXCAL Coil Cables, JUST FOLLOW the INSTRUCTIONS, and MAKE SURE you
OVERLAP It!! The Tape VULCANIZES to ITSELF, and REALLY SEALS!! I personally let my Detector SET for at least 24hrs., after DOING a REPAIR!! Also, get some
CLEAR S-I-L-C-O-N-E GREASE at a Scuba Shop, and APPLY A T-H-I-N LAYER of grease AROUND Your COIL CABLE from the Contol Box DOWN to the Coil Connector. The SILICONE GREASE also comes in a SPRAY!! It M-A-Y Prevent further SPLITTING, NO Guarantees!! Best of LUCK, Les Robinson.

I really liked the sound of cutting off the cable and re-soldering the ends but I am afraid I would screw something up. This thing works great right now. Les, I read about that tape and think it sound great. For the time being I went with "Liquid Tape" a brush on that seals and protects the wire. I put on multiple coats and filled in the low spots with it. The cable won't be smooth ever again but I think it will turn water. I wanted to save the tape as another option. I think the tape will make things smoother and make sure no moisture gets through. I will go to the tape if this fix starts to show any signs of cracking. Thanks for the suggestions.

Length of coil wire should have no impact on workings of coil. Remember the CZ7 and 7A had 3 ft coil wires. Have to admit would have it done at a shop where they do electrical repairs as its tight going and they can professionally solder and test the solder joints. Years ago when I hipmounted every unit pulled a couple of solder joints out and local repairman repaired them several times. Imagine if you had the tools and expertise could do by yourself but for the cost of repair a job for a pro...

I have gone with the liquid wire fix for the time being. I am keeping the gorilla tape in my mind as a future option. The idea of cutting the cable off and fixing it is a great one but beyond my soldering skills. Dan, thanks for the idea of hiring a pro. That just never popped into my mind but will sure keep it in mind if the rest of the cable stays good. My fix isn't very pretty but works fine and will keep moisture out of the cable. Thanks, for the suggestions.

Cometguy, The RESCUE Tape, that I told YOU about is SALTWATER PROOF, that's what I RECOMMENDED!! Les Robinson.

I used Gorilla tape on my scoop when the wooden handle split and it is like the day I did it, 8 months later! It seems too thick and stiff for cable taping. The Rescue tape sounds like the thing. I bought a roll and keep it in car for emergency repairs.

Sounds like a length of "watertight" heat shrink over the lower section would seal things up and add some armor to the cable.
