CZ-70 Pro or CZ7a ?

Hwy 395

New member
Hi. I've been on the lookout for one of these two detectors, but I was wondering if there was a significant difference between them? The CZ-70 is a bit newer, but other than that, are there any differences?

I think one major difference is the CZ70 takes two 9V batteries that slide into the control box, therefore the unit can be taken off the shaft and it can be hip mounted while the CZ7a ( NOT 7a Pro) takes eight AA batteries and since there is a battery pack under the arm, it can't be hip mounted since I believe the wires from the battery box to the control box are fed through the tube of shaft.

I think most if not all features on the 70 and 7a are the same ( ie, 4 tones, notching, back light, etc.).

cz 7a pro has 3 tones, and the cz-70 pro has 4 tones, other than THAT difference, the two units are identical.

Could not remember whether the 7a had 3 or 4 tones. I know the 7a Pro went to the 9V design and the pistol grip. I would rather have a 7a Pro than a 7a just because of the ability to hip mount it or change the configuration.

CZ7A pratically identical except on CZ70 pro square tab named relic and given a fourth tone..

CZ7A rodmount only S rod not pistol grip, AA batteries under armcup, square tab instead of relic on the CZ70 pro....

As far as comparing workwise basically the same guts with same depth and stability...

Wow guys,
Now I feel bad having asked you all of these questions in PMs I guess I should have thrown it out here on the forum. Isn't it funny how many of these questions come to different people at different times. Thanks to all of your help, I ended up with a CZ70 pro. I don't have it yet, but hope it is a good one. Thanks for jumping in and sharing your knowledge. I missed the Fisher wagon when it went by the first time, but I have gotten on board lately.

yess!..the 4th tone on the cz-70 pro was an excellent idea, however all I ever found with it was "square tabs!"
in MY opinion, the cz-7a pro was just as good as the cz-70 pro for the aforementioned reason.

Are you saying it has some advantage over the CZ70 pro? I thought the battery idea for balance was a good one.
I would like to hear more about your thoughts and experience with the machine.

CZ 7a although a tad heavier is a rod mount only and with batteries under armcup gives superior weighting and ergonomics something like the 1266..
Also with multiple AA batteries instead of two 9 volts gives 80-90 hours with a good set of alkalines.
For some reason it never took off with sales perhaps beause it was not hipmountable and was replaced by the CZ7A pro...

Boy I am confused. Im seeing the CZ7a pro has belt mountable head and uses 2 nine volts. Is that correct? I looking at buying one so your help would be great. Thanks

The CZ7a (NOT PRO ) used 8 AA batteries and the pack was mounted under the arm rest, therefore not hip mountable.

The CZ70 (seventy) is a the next step up, and I believe the major difference is the 4th tone. Most all other funtions/options are the same ( ie. 2 9V batteries, hip mountable, etc.) . I sometimes see the term CZ70 and CZ70 Pro. I think these are one in the same and not sure if there is any difference. I may be wrong, but I don't think Fisher made a CZ70 first, and then a CZ70 Pro.

The series goes:

CZ7a
CZ7a PRO
CZ70

But....CZ7 and CZ7A used "12" not "8" AA Batteries...about 80 - 90 hours hunt time despending how much you use your pinpoint button as it draws a lot of juice...on all CZ's..

It was a typo. Really just wanted to show the difference between the two in terms of battery type and the fact one is not hip mountable.
