CZ-6a Rescue is a Success

Several weeks ago I picked up a non-working CZ-6a off the bay as a bit of a project. When it arrived, I opened in up and checked out the guts and determined it would need a couple parts replaced to get it up and running again. I made a call to Keith at East Texas and after explaining what I had, he felt sure he had the parts needed to make the fix. Off she went on the white truck.

Yesterday, the white truck brought her back. :clapping: I found a fresh pair of Energizer 9V's, a set of headphones and quickly did some initial testing with some Zincolns, square and round tabs, a few rings and loose change. Then off we went to the slopes.

I initially started in the standard pole mount arrangement, knowing I would need to change before too long. (I am not as young as I used to be) Within a short time, the steepness of the slope and my shoulder demanded it was time to change. I changed to a hip-mount, first left side, then right side. Neither worked well as the housing was in the way when kneeling trying to make a recovery. The chest mount was last and seems to work best. :beers:

The CZ didn't disappoint and even running the standard 8" coil, which makes coverage slow, I picked up plenty of coins and ski stuff across the board, all categorizing properly in their respective target ID slots. To speed up coverage in the future, I will likely pick up the 10.5 inch coil. Being that I will be running a chest mount, the weight shouldn't be too bad.

So it looks like the rescue project was a success and I now have an old NEW friend for the slopes this year. And while the slopes have been hit HARD over the years, and good finds have thinned dramatically to where most have given up, I hope to turn up a few more BIG silver coins as well as enjoy the alpine views at 11,000 ft.

Best to the rest of you CZ'ers out there.

Nice find a fix! I was wondering the turn around time as He was ill for awhile? As I have a oldie but goodie in need of repair. He said He could fix it through email but just wondering and was it reasonable price wise? Thanks.

I think it was.The battery contacts on their little PC board were corroded from a leaky battery and the Pinpoint button was broken. Both were replaced with factory components, which are not easy to find anymore.

I actually called the Fisher HQ and had hopes of getting it repaired AND getting the water resistant seals all changed out as I wanted to be able to hunting in the rain, etc. But they said their replacement seals were no longer available. I weighed the possible costs and decided to go with Keith and all of the positive feedback I've heard. Fortunately, it worked out.

As for turn-around time, it was a couple weeks, as I caught him when he was out of town.

Keith seems to be the only game in town for those oldies but goodies but have heard some complaints about turn around time...
As far as hipmounting be careful you don't weaken or break a coil connector solder joints and you have an excellent unit so enjoy.....

At the time, the 6a's sold in the $300-350 mark. If the were 'calibrated' by Tom Dankowski and had a measured depth to a clad dime in the 11" neighborhood you can add another $100. At least those I watched.

I just got My Wilson RC II back from Keith as pic on Vintage Forum. He did a great job on repair and cleaned it up as a little rough when I got it. He did it all in 7 working days so nows a good time if you got a oldie in need of repair.

Keith repaired a Shadow X5 for me. It wasn't fully functioning and needed some new parts and he did a great job for a very reasonable price and time to fix it. I am glad to hear he fixes CZs also.
