CZ 6A HELP

diggindirt

New member
Hi all,

I just purchased a CZ 6A but don't think it's working correctly. I was testing in the house (basement has cement floor) and can't get the threshold to work in "auto tune" mode. I never owned a CZ so I'm not sure if this detector is working correctly. If I turn on the presets as listed in the manual, the machine seems to work in silent mode (disc) correctly but if I switch to "auto tune" it just works as in disc but with the single tone audio and no threshold??????? I tried everything and can't get a threshold working on it. The other thing is in disc (0 to 10) the meter rests all the way to the right on the coin mark. If I go over a pull tab it does go to that section and if I run over iron the meter does show it. However, if I turn to auto tune the meter stays all the way to the left with no target motion and I think that's working correctly. I might need to get a refund on the detector if the threshold function is really not working correctly. I almost blew my ears off turning the volume all the way up hoping to hear it somehow.

Please let me know if I'm doing something wrong with the settings or if this is normal.

Thanks!

Hi again,

OK, I moved the headphone plug around a bit and found a scratchy sound to it. It turns out the jack was pretty dirty and I sprayed contact cleaner in it. This helped and I now have the LOWEST ALMOST CAN'T HEAR IT THRESHOLD with the sensitivity set at 10. I would believe that the threshold would be very loud with the setting at 10. The manual states to start at 10 and lower until a comfort zone is found. So, I do think something is still wrong and can't decide if I need to send it back now or try to repair it (could send to Fisher but that might cost a bunch)!

Have you heard of this issue???

Thanks?

Now I realize the jack connector is loose! If I put slight pressure on the plug when in the jack, the sound either disappears or is barely there. However this is only in

The factory set-up for threshold is low sound at 10 no sound at 9 . That sounds like it is working normal. You have one of the best units ever made. I don't know what to make of a loose mike plug???

Hi again,

I cleaned the phone jack connector one more time (contact cleaner) and it fixed the intermittent connection. The jack was just really dirty and now it's working real smooth!!!

Thanks for all the replies and PMs telling me not to worry and assuring me that the machine is working correctly!!!!!

I did some air tests and it's really quite sensitive too! I think I'm going to find some decent targets with this detector and can't wait to get out with it!

I WANT TO WISH EVERYONE A VERY HAPPY HEALTHY HOLIDAY AND NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Diggindirt, You need to set all your controls at 10 with it set in Autotune. Then raise and lower the coil to an approx. height of 1-2ft. with A STEADY/SMOOTHE/ CONSISTENT Pumping Motion, While LOWERING your Ground Balance Setting, and the Threshold Tone will change!! You WANT IT TO A POINT, where there is HARDLY ANY CHANGE IN THRESHOLD SOUND as you raise/lower the coil to and from the ground. IMPORTANT! Make sure there is NO Metal in the Ground where you are trying to Ground Balance. At that point, you should have it PERFECTLY Ground Balanced!! Then set your Sensitivity Setting /
Volume Controls to where you want them. Also, go on to the EXCALIBUR/SOVEREIGN Forum, and post a message requesting Virginia Beach- Mike to Please
Post his CZ Gound Balancing Instructions. Then, make a Photocopy of His Instructions, put them in a Plastic Sleeve, and carry them in your detector bag, or somewhere you will have immediate access to them, until you get the procedure down pat!! Virginia Beach-Mike is the GURU of CZ Operation/Ground Balancing for myself and probably several others on this forum. Best of luck, Les Robinson

Diggin,

I use my 6A and the NJ beach and almost always use all metal ( unless in a ton of iron/nails). When I get a target, I just switch the machine to ) discrim and hear the tone. If low, I move on ( unless the target is very deep...but most of the time it's shallow bits of iron ). In salt mode, the machine runs very stable, and I can run in normal mode on the dry sand. I don't know if the salt mode is less sensitive to gold or not, but in all metal, the machine goes very deep. Hitting quarters consistenly at 18+ inches.

That's certainly a method preferred by many. I don't use my CZ on the beach...not for about 4 years or so. I use the Minelab Excalibur, which I prefer for two reasons. One, it's waterproof. And I work the wet sand at the water's edge at low tide at night pretty much exclusively. And maybe a little shallow water...like no more that waist deep usually. But all it takes is one rouge wave and you will have an $800 paperweight. And I don't do dry sand, so waterproof is a concern. I also like the threshold of the Excal...it helps you get a few targets that a non-threshold machine might miss. Like the ones you miss by a couple of inchs. The wide threshold "net" of the Excal will get a break in the threshold on those and cause me to go back for another look. I did pretty good on gold and diamond rings with my CZ but have done FAR better with the Excal. So now the CZ is my machine of choice for hunting those old silver coins sites...which is where it shines best anyway. Definitely not a BAD beach machine at all though. I have always said that if I could have only ONE machine, it would be a CZ.

Mike...I utilize the same methodology as you. I have an Excal that I use on the beach 95% of the time ( when my shoulder isn't up to the task, and I want a fast 1-2 hour hunt, I use my HH Wader). Since both are waterproof, there are no worries. Prior to getting the Excal, I used the 6a on the beach in the autotune mode as previously stated. I also used my DFX as well, and it's a darn good unit too, finding me a nice gold bracelet. BUT...both the CZ and DFX are not waterproof and I did not venture too close to the water, and that is where lots of good targets lie. So, I had to go waterproof.

And I agree, getting the deep silver coins is where that CZ shines. And I like the 6a being water resistant, so rain does not effect it and it can get as muddy as hell and you don't have to worry about it.

Couldn't agree more. The only CZ I've ever OWNED is the CZ-70, though I did hunt with a CZ-3D all day at one site and have used a CZ-7a Pro a few times. The CZ's are some damn good machines and I will always own my CZ-70. It's truly a "Do-it-all" machine.
