CZ-5's pinpointing-yuck

All this time I thought that when the coil passed over the target, that the target would be under the center circle of the coil when in normal detecting mode! Not so!I've found that when swinging the coil to the right that the target is under the outer edge of the left side of the coil and when swinging to the left the target is under the inside edge of the right side of the coil.So the audio part is behind the actual detection of the target. This is why I have been lost when trying to dig a target.Oh yeah I was moving the coil very slow!So now I have to use pinpoint to get near the actual target when digging and my batteries will not last as long.

VCO on CZ's units pinpoint on a dime...If you wish to pinpoint in Disc. mode practice with some coins on the ground with coil raised and should with little or no problems..Fisher gives you an excellent pinpoint mode( VCO) and if your worried about batteries should be able to pinpoint with reasonable accuracy with some practice with the Disc. mode...Many beach hunters use this mode as they have a large scoop and accuracy doesn't have to be on a dime...Different strokes for different folks and the extra battery useage is sure worth it to me to dig one small hole and retrieve the target..

Jim,

Dan's suggestion of raising the coil has always worked for me. With the open spider coil its a snap to pick a small spot on the ground where it hits from all directions. The only time I use the pinpoint is when I need to dig small holes.

Jim,
Use rechargeable batts like I do, then you don't care how many you use. I love the pinpointing with the VCO on my 3D which is basically the same unit you have. The fact that it picks up the target on the edge of the coil really helps me pinpoint the target more precisely. It also helps me figure the size of the target. I use the pinpoint mode on even shallow targets.

I use the pinpoint feature almost exclusively, detect a couple hours per week, and have only changed batteries once this year. I don't think the use of the VCO significanly reduces batteries...and hey, they're cheap at the dollar store!

By the way...where in Alabama are you? I'm in Huntsville...

Hunting beaches never used the pinpoint as I do on land. Got much better mileage without using pinpoint.VCO pinpoint does use more juice and is the first to be affected when batteries are low. Many using NiMH rechargeables and do well....
